“Yeah ha, it sucks. I keep letting off bits of power whenever I can, but it isn’t my power that’s building up, but hers. I have no outlet for it.” Mac chuckled. “I didn’t even mean to take her power. As soon as the power transfer started my mind went black. I couldn’t control it.”
“What do you mean you weren’t controlling the transfer?” both dragons said at the same time.
“I started the kiss, and all I could focus on were her lips. She is perfect and I was such an ass to her. I was going to pull away and apologize but she grabbed me back and started the transfer. I was held in place one second and the next she was dead in my arms, and everything was hitting the flame. Talon shifted and stood over her body. I was confused and disoriented. You were crying, Terran was confused, and Zeph was talking shit. I can only remember saying that I didn’t mean to over and over. I didn’t even understand that she was truly dead until she came back, and her heart started beating again. Her power pulses when her heart beats, like an extension of her.”
“Why didn’t you say anything before this?” River hit the back of his head.
“I wanted to explain it to her first. I was headed up here to talk to her and try my best to explain what happened.”
“Well, when she wakes up, explain it to her so she doesn’t think you hate her and want her to die too. Otherwise, she could sever your mate bond like Zeph.” River shook his head.
“Don’t you two find it weird how much he’s changed? I remembered Zeph up to like a couple hundred years ago and he was already so in love with his mate. He talked about her every day and how he would treat her. What happened to that male?” Terran asked.
River scrubbed his face and Mac grunted. “I don’t honestly know. That far back is murky. Anyways I don’t want to leave these two alone with him still in the keep. I will escort him out of the doorway and revoke his access for now. Care to help out Terran? He seemed like he would throw a fit, but Araiya is my first concern.” Terran nodded. “Mac, can I trust you to stand guard?”
“Yeah, I will watch over our girl. Make sure Miss Brooke stays safe too.” Mac looked down at his feet. “Do you think she will forgive me?”
“I don’t know man, but she is an amazing woman. We can only hope she has enough patience for all of us.” River patted his shoulder as he passed with Terran. Mac laughed and leaned against the wall to wait.
Soren woke to a kiss on her shoulder and then arms slid around her pulling her close. “You are finally awake, Mate.” Soren couldn’t help the smile that stretched across her face. Mate, a word she had just learned the meaning of.
“Why are you awake so early?” Soren sighed and she closed her eyes again.
“We just found each other finally. I don’t want to waste a minute.” His voice came from over her shoulder.
“We didn’t just find each other.” Soren laughed. “You have always been with me, same with the guys. We just came of age, and it clicked.”
“So, you’re saying you always loved me.” The man chuckled. “I knew it. Callen is going to be devastated when he comes back. He has loved you forever.” Soren lost her smile when he said that.
“The guys will hopefully understand and be supportive. I am the only female which has got to be hard on them, but I am not meant for them. Another will come along for them; the Goddess has promised me. It’s just hard. There are only seven of us. We are too new to the world. We will grow to be guardians, and our hatchlings will be the beginning.”
“Our hatchlings. I love the sound of that. Let’s try for some right now.” Soren laughed.
The dream faded on the laugh and Araiya woke to tears streaming down her face. She had seen how it ended a thousand times over the years. It was so much worse now that she had seen how beautiful it all started. Their love was so bright. What had happened to cause it to dim and turn so dark at the end?
“Oh, dearie why are you crying? Are you in any pain?” Brooke rushed over from where she was reading.
“No. I just had a sad dream is all. What were you reading? Why am I in bed again? I always seem to wake up in this damn bed.” Brooke chuckled as she sat on the edge of the bed. Araiya sat up and leaned back against the headboard. Brooke reached out and patted her hand.
“What do you remember lass?”
“I don’t remember much; it goes black once I confronted Zeph. I asked Airyn to trust me about Zephyr, then nothing. What happened? Is everyone okay?”
“Oh, my dear you made sure of that with the shield you slapped in place. Thank you for that. They are good boys I swear it. The Goddess came for a visit, which was once in a lifetime for my old self. After you handled Zeph and the Goddess said her peace you collapsed, and River put you in here to sleep and recoup. He didn’t trust Zeph around me or you so here I am stuck with you.” Brooke chuckled. “As for the book I was reading I asked Mac to grab it for me to do a little research as you slept.”
“Research. About what?”
Brooke got up and grabbed the book. “Well, the visit from the Goddess and the mention of the Al’ta Moir Dracoy made me remember a book I found long ago in River’s office. It is about the very beginning from the Al’ta Moir perspective. It is written in ancient Draconian, but River knows how to read it and he’s taught me. Anyway, dear, she was the only other Spirit user so I was hoping there would be something that could help you since you helped me.”
She came back and settled in and handed Araiya the book. “How old is this book?”
“Oh, must be over a few thousand years, probably the very first book ever written. The Al’ta Moir created the Dracoy language with the Goddess. She was her daughter after all.”
“Holy crap I shouldn’t be touching this book.” Araiya tried to hand it back.
“I cleared it with River. These books were meant to come to you anyways. The Al’ta Moir knew they would be needed, or so River said. Anyways, there is a room in the old keep that I think you should visit.”
“Brooke, slow down. I have no idea what you’re even talking about. What is the old keep and what room?” Araiya shook her head in confusion.
“The old keep is the Castle in the Spirit province. It’s in the middle of the forest surrounding the Chosen Village. It is hidden by the fog; anyway, in the keep there is a hidden room. It was the Al’ta Moir sacred room that she says holds the answer.”
“The answer to what, though?”
“The book just says it answers to Spirit.” Brooke gestured to Araiya. “You are Spirit.”
“Not right now I don’t have my power, Mac does.”
