Airyn. I have need of you. Zephyr is losing control, and I have no power of my own to protect those here who cannot protect themselves.
Araiya felt the power burst into her being. She slammed out her hand, blocking the wind from leaving the hallway. With a thought she slammed a bubble of calm air around the men protecting Brooke. Debris started bouncing off the walls she slammed in place creating a whirlwind inside the confines that held her and Zephyr.
“What are you doing? How is this possible?” Zephyr screamed at her.
“You think you’re so special. You have the right to do whatever to whomever without any repercussions because the All-Mother is gone. You and your brothers-in-arms have run amok in the world without someone checking your power, ego or actions. That stops now!” Araiya screamed back.
Zephyr laughed. “You think a pathetic child of a girl will be able to stop any of us? To stop me? You couldn’t even keep your power when Mac was taking Fire back. You are a worthless girl, a worthless mate. You don’t get to reject me, as I reject you. I will do what I want whenever I want, and no one will stop me. Not you, not the other Enforcers, not one person is strong enough to stop me.”
Young Mother what is needed?
Airyn, I need you to trust me, okay? Allow me complete control of Air.
Of course, Young Mother, do as you must.
River grabbed Brooke as all hell broke loose. The guys stood in front taking most of the debris, but shards of glass got through and cut his arm and Brooke’s cheek. It was getting too hard to breathe when the air around the four of them stilled, while everywhere else in the hallway was hell. Wind whipped, streaming from Zephyr, glass, dust, paper even books were flying around slamming into the obvious barrier around them.
“Oh god, Araiya is in there,” Brooke whispered.
All three men jolted from the frozen state they were in. They were at the barrier the next second, pounding on it and yelling to both inside. River started to panic. He looked at his brothers and saw the terror mirrored on their faces. They didn’t put the best foot forward his brothers, but they didn’t want to lose their mate, not again.
They all heard the back and forth between the two. Zeph had just said that none was stronger than him, which was bullshit. The four were equal in power, but Zeph was the weakest in actual hand-to-hand combat. Any one of them could defeat him, but it wasn’t another Enforcer. It was their Chosen mate who wouldn’t stand a chance. The wind tunnel increased blocking their view of Araiya. A door ripped from its hinges and flew to where they last saw her, and Brooke screamed. The Enforcers pulled back into their powers and were just about to blast the wall of air and then the world froze.
The wind instantly died. The door that was about to hit Araiya froze right in front of her face and it fell, revealing her. There at the start of the hallway Araiya was floating. Her hair was floating above her shoulders. Her eyes glowed a bright violet, making her look like a Goddess. Her clothes were hanging by threads, but she didn’t even seem to notice. At the other end Zephyr was pacing and without even noticing Araiya’s state he screamed and dropped.
“What have you done you bitch?” He whirled and stopped at the sight of her there. “What are you?”
“Ah, the whelp finally sees.” The voice came from Araiya, but it was not hers. The voice was deeper, huskier, and more ethereal. “I helped give you life youngling. I expect you to treat me with the respect of my status.” Brooke gasped from where she was and dropped to her knees.
“The Goddess.” Brooke bowed her head as tears streamed down her face. She started when she felt a hand touch her shoulders and she looked up at her Goddess.
“At least one of you has some sense and respect. Rise, Chosen, I do not expect or want kneeling followers.” The Goddess used Araiya to help Brooke stand. “You have been faithful Chosen, even without finding your mate.”
“I serve you wherever you guided me. Always.” The Goddess kissed her brow and cupped her face.
“You will find him Brooke, and once you find him, I will give you a bounty for serving me so faithfully. When that time comes, and you will know when I mean, call on Araiya. She will understand.”
“Thank you.” Brooke stepped back when the Goddess turned back to the men.
“I gave you the gift of a mate, one equal to you, one to share so you wouldn’t be pulled apart and this is how you cherish your gift.” The Goddess in Araiya turned to River. “River my boy I am happy that one of you has sense. Watch over her. She needs you more than you can understand. Things will only worsen; you need to look closer to Fire.” She then turned to the Fire Enforcer himself. “You steal a gift that was not yours to take, one from your mother and one from me. You stole her life force. To what end does that serve you? Had you not prayed to me for thousands of lifetimes for this very Chosen?”
The Goddess turned to Terran. “You, Terran, slow to move and make a decision-steady, strong and proud. You will lose her with your indecision. Move swiftly before your bond is severed.” Lastly, she turned toward Zephyr. “The mighty Air Enforcer brought to heel. What say you?” The Goddess quirked a brow.
“Where is my power? Why did you lock it away?” Zephyr clutched his chest feeling the empty hollow part of his soul.
“Oh, that wasn’t me, Zephyr. That was Araiya and your father. The Chosen won his support when she was in your territory, and he answers to her. She asked him to trust her, and he did. She asked for full control of Air and he gave it. She locked you out. Clever of her, to be honest. She saw how you treated one without access to her Goddess-given power due to her diligent service to me.” The Goddess raised her voice as the air started to grow thin. The Goddess walked over to the kneeling man and gripped his chin. “I have chosen these men and women to mate with my Dracoy. I promised them love and value. I promised them that everyone was equal and that by choosing my path, they would be respected regardless of status, power or mate. The Enforcers of the elements were sworn to uphold my path. Your parents, the very essence of the elements, run through your veins by my intervention, yet you forget your place. I have watched as you have abused the mate-less. I have stood by as your brothers allowed you to be cruel. I have watched as your ego has grown. I cannot intervene, not directly in any way. Be grateful for that.” She released his face and turned away. ” I cannot intervene, but my Chosen can. Your power will remain locked away until she allows.” Zephyr screamed. “Hopefully, you will learn to be a better man and a better mate.”
Araiya dropped like a sack of rocks. She hit the floor before anyone could even take a breath. Everyone started but River made it to her first. He picked her up off the floor and checked if she was alive. “She is still breathing, thank fuck.” River walked back to the room he had given her and laid her back in bed. “She must be burned out or something.”
River left her in the care of Brooke and closed the door behind him. He was walking back to the hallway when the yelling started.
“Let me through.”
“Back off Zeph.” Terran pushed the man back.
“No Terran, that bitch took my power and I want it back now.” Zeph made to move past Mac and Terran again and both men blocked his path again. “Fucking move. You won’t stop me from seeing her. She’s my mate too.”
“Actually, Zeph we all heard she rejected your mate bond and claim,” River stated when he walked up. “You have no right to see her. What is more, you have no right to get into that room and try to bully your way back into having your power. What is it you said, if you weren’t weak, you would have been able to keep your power? You called our mate weak and pathetic when Mac siphoned her power. I guess this makes you weak and pathetic doesn’t it Zeph?” Zeph let out a warning growl and River flipped him off as he stormed off.
Everyone released a breath. “How did we miss this?” Terran rubbed the back of his neck.
“I don’t know man. To be fair we have been wrapped up in running our own areas. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t been around Air a lot these last twenty or so years. We have our trip every year, but it was just us, so I didn’t see him with the Chosen.” Mac kicked at the debris on the floor.
“What the fuck are we going to do?”
“Zeph isn’t our concern right now. Our concern is our mate.” River leaned next to Mac. “She doesn’t have her power back, and I am certain she won’t accept it back yet. I think she is going to use it against you Mac. The build-up should be painful by now.”
