“River, she hasn’t started the transfer. She’s just kissing him. Unless she starts, I don’t need to be involved in this.”

“Give her a minute, fuck, Zeph. This is her first lesson in power and it’s one of the hardest. Not to mention you three have been less than fucking welcoming to the only mate we will ever be given.”

“Hey, that isn’t fair River. I didn’t even say anything.”

“Nope, you didn’t Terran. You didn’t say one damn thing to her. You don’t know her or what she had to overcome. I won’t discuss this anymore. Hold Mckenna in place and give our mate a fucking chance before you follow Mckenna. This bastard has already jeopardized everything.” River leaned closer to her. “Araiya if you can start to release the power back to Mckenna slowly, it will recognize his power and should be a smooth transfer if you allow it.”

Araiya focused back on the power; the ball of magical power strands had gotten even bigger the entire time she was focused on the others. She poked at it and pictured in her mind what she needed for the power to unravel and flow into Mckenna. The energy slowly separated from the ball and trickled into him. Araiya pushed for it to go faster, and the power responded. Her entire body slammed into McKenna’s body as the power slammed out of her and into him. She started to scream as the power ripped from her, pushing it too fast. It slammed into the man she was kissing, and he grunted and grabbed for her. She kept screaming as the power kept flowing. She couldn’t stop the flow. The energy was still pumping into Mckenna. The pain was unbearable. Her body felt like it was ripping it into pieces.

Mckenna had his arms wrapped around her like steel bands. She kept screaming. She felt his power calling and coaxing to the fire, calling it home. He didn’t realize he was also calling her power into himself. He didn’t notice the color shift. There was barely any fire left. Just her innate gift that he was starting to siphon off, like a leech.

Araiya started calling power back to herself, pulling and clawing it back into her soul, creating a shield around her spark. If she allowed him to take everything, she was going to die. She kept pulling away, her body mimicking the movements of her soul. She started to push at his shoulders and claw down his arms trying to get away, all the while calling back her power. She could still feel his arms locked around her as she started to push at his face.

She felt River at her back and grabbed onto his hand with one of hers, hoping she could somehow get him to understand. She grew weaker. Mckenna continued pulling out her remaining power. She only had her spark left behind her wall and felt River’s consciousness at the outskirts of her mind and she flung open that gate to allow him entry.

Araiya?

River he’s taking everything. He didn’t stop at Fire. He’s ripped my element away as well. I only have my spark left, and he’s calling to that too. I can’t stop him; he’s trying to take it all.

What?

RIVER, HE’S KILLING ME!

She screamed again as she felt the wall around her spark break, and everything went black.

She was sitting with her back pressed against the dead tree on the hill, just watching over the forest below, when she heard steps coming up and stopping next to her. Araiya looked up at the Goddess who was watching her.

“You linger here too long little one. You won’t be able to get back.” The Goddess lowered herself to sit.

“I don’t know if I should go back. Fading sounds pretty decent right about now.” Araiya leaned her head back against the tree. She looked at the Goddess who had become so familiar to her now. “He killed me and didn’t seem to even care that I was his mate.”

“Little one, we all have our scars. This is now one of his deepest. He didn’t realize until it was too late.” The Goddess gathered her under her arm and pulled Araiya close. “Close your eyes and listen. Follow the chains that wrap around your heart and listen.”

Araiya relaxed into the sweet embrace of her Goddess and listened to the mate bonds. She saw six chains, all different chains wrapped around her heart. “Goddess?”

“All will come to light, daughter. Focus and listen.” Araiya looked again and tugged on the first.

The chain flashed a brilliant blue, and River’s voice rang from it. He was sobbing. “Please Goddess, send her back to me. This can’t be it. This is just the beginning. Send her home. I will give you…” His voice faded as she released the chain and looked back to the Goddess.

“River is one of the most open to love and loyal creations ever created. His emotions are as vast as the oceans and as turbulent. You were his missing piece, and he felt the connection when he healed you. These men have waited a millennia for you daughter. These men, created not of me, or my consort, were created with only you in their heart of hearts.”

Araiya looked at the next chain and touched it. A dull flash of green came with a voice she didn’t recognize. “McKenna, what have you done? She was our mate, made for us, as we were for her. How could you do this? I didn’t even get to speak with her. I will never get the chance to know her. HOW COULD YOU…” His yelling faded into the ether.

“Terran, solid, strong and slow to come to a decision. He felt the snap of connection but wanted to move slowly and get to know you before he approached the discussion of being mates. The man moves about as fast as the land does until he comes to a decision and then he’s like a landslide.” The Goddess smiled down at Araiya.

“I didn’t even know these men, and they had already decided they hated me.”

“No child, not hate, never hate.” The Goddess nudged her to the next.

Araiya stroked a tiny chain and it flashed silver. No voice came out of it, and she turned to the Goddess. A question was plain on her face.

“Some questions cannot be answered when asked little one, that is one of them. Move on to the next.”

Araiya nodded and stroked another chain that flashed a dim yellow. Another voice she knew came to her. “Leave him alone. She did this to herself. She should have never started the power transfer if she didn’t know how to protect herself. She was weak…”

The Goddess snorted. “Zephyr, he once was a sweet lovable boy, one you would have felt safe with, but due to necessity he’s become this. Hopefully, you will change him back to the boy his mother loved.”

“His mother?”

“The Enforcers came from the elements and their partners. The elements are balanced by their elementals. It was forgotten long ago that the two were separate beings, a loving pair. The actual elements were older than I was but were not strong enough to create. When I came into being I was strong but lonely. So, I created my consort, my balance and mate. The older elemental gods came to me begging for me to create them a mate. So, one by one my consort and I helped them create their perfect partner. The Enforcers do not come from me or my consort but of the elemental pairings.” The Goddess stroked down Araiya’s hair. “The elements have long since faded, but their partners young by any standard for gods or Goddesses held power in their stead. They were watching over their children and mine. Firwyn has joined her husband in the ether. He has been waiting impatiently. I hope they are happy, anyways move along little one. You have been here too long.”

Araiya sighed and reached for the next chain. It flashed gold and then turned black. No sounds could be heard but she felt love and pain come from the chain until it faded. She glanced at the Goddess, who was again shaking her head and looking away. Araiya didn’t push. She could see it hurt the Goddess. She plucked the last one; it flashed red, and she heard McKenna’s voice.

“I didn’t realize it was hers. It felt like home. I thought she was holding back some for herself. I was angry, and I couldn’t tell. I just kept calling for Fire, nothing else. I don’t know what happened. I’m sorry, let me give it back. Just let me touch her…” McKenna’s voice faded, but Araiya heard a roar shake down the chains.

“What or who was that?” Araiya clutched at the chains, but they had started to fade. “What is going on?” Her fingers were disappearing as well, and she began to panic.
