I giggle a little to myself, pressing my hand over my mouth to contain the noise. Heâ??d told me he was interested in someone, but I hadnâ??t realized he was sleeping with them. How long had this been going on?

I take a few steps into the hall, peering down the steps, but whoever it is has disappeared. I shake my head, then, starting down the stairs myself as I consider that this is certainly not a mark in the be-loyal-to-Daniel category. Clearly, heâ??s not being loyal to me â?? not even really pretending to be.

Oh well. A problem for another time, I think, walking down the hall and pressing the door open to the kitchen.

Itâ??s very early, but there are still a few people here, getting their day started. I walk over to the espresso machine and make myself a cup, looking around for Kent. I hope I get to ask him about a trip to see my dad before the day has a chance to piss him off.

I screw my mouth to the side, though, disappointed when I realize that heâ??s not here. I lean back against the counter on which the espresso machine rests, taking a sip of my hot drink and considering my next choices.

To my surprise, Jerome pushes through the door to the kitchen and smiles at me, coming right over. â??Hey,â? he says. â??Stables today?â?

I nod eagerly. â??Yeah, Iâ??m just looking for Kent first â?? I wanted to ask him â??â??

His grimace stops my words, though. â??Ohhh,â? he says, â??sorry, Fay. But heâ??s already gone.â?

â??What!â? I exclaim, my shoulders slumping in my disappointment. â??Man, I got up early and everything! I thought I would catch him.â?

â??Sorry,â? he says, putting his hands in his pockets. â??Yeah, heâ??s got a lot of business today and wants to get started early. But!â? He gives me a big smile here. â??He wants me to take you to the tables. So,â? he gives me a deep, mocking bow, â??Iâ??m at your service, my lady.â?

â??What?â? I say, shocked. â??Seriously? You?â?

He laughs and straightens up, nodding. â??I know. I was surprised as you are. He gave me that look that meant touch her and you die, though. So.â? He shrugs, â??best behavior and everything. But looks like Iâ??m back on good terms with the boss.â?

â??Heâ??s so crazy,â? I murmur, looking down into my coffee. â??One day heâ??s punching you for hanging out with me, the next he assigns you to hang out with me. I canâ??t make any sense out of him.â?

â??Maybe he likes it that way,â? Jerome says, shrugging again. â??Keeps people on their toes with the chaos of his moods.â?

â??Well,â? I murmur, setting my cup back on the machine and pushing the buttons again for a refill. â??If weâ??ve got all day, might as well have a luxurious breakfast.â?

Jerome nods eagerly in agreement and heads off to ask whoever is cooking today to make us something. Then, we sit down at my usual table, chatting passively. About thirty minutes into our meal, Daniel joins us, the two greeting each other casually as Daniel comes and gives me a kiss on my cheek.

Huh, I think, looking between them as Daniel sits and they begin to converse easily. I didnâ??t even know they knew each other.

Jerome drives casually down the country roads close to the stables, singing along with the old country music from the 50s and 60s thatâ??s playing on the radio. I smile, watching and listening to him. Who knew that a guy trying to work his way up in a mafia family could sing so well.

And knew so much Patsy Cline.

I shrug, looking out the window, enjoying the view when suddenly Jerome slams on the breaks.

â??Shit,â? he mutters as our car skids to a stop, beginning to fishtail a little.

I gasp, grabbing on to the handle above my head and the center console to hold myself steady. My vision, of course, snaps directly to the road, anxious to see what the hell is in our way.

My eyes go wide with shock when I see it.

A bright red Ferrari, situated sideways in the middle of the road, blocking any traffic that might come by on either side.

And leaning against it, his arms crossed casually in front of him, is a young man in a fashionable designer sweatsuit. With tattoos all the way up his neck.

â??Shit,â? Jerome says again, scrambling for the glove box, popping it open and pulling out â??

Oh my god, a gun.

â??What!?â? I ask, my eyes following it with shock. â??Has that been there the whole time!?â?

Jerome ignores me, flicking the safety off the gun and expertly ensuring that the clip is full of bullets.

â??Stay still, Fay,â? he murmurs, looking out of the windshield as Ivan stands up from his position leaning against the car, smirking at Jerome in the front seat. Then, his eyes slide to mine, and he cocks his head to the side.

A question.

I glance back at Jerome, the loaded gun in his hand, and make an impulsive decision.

Before he can stop me, I pull the handle on my door and push it open, putting one foot out.

â??Fay!â? Jerome yells, grabbing for me, but Iâ??m out of the car before he can get a grasp on me. â??Get the fuck back in here!â?

â??Heâ??s not going to hurt me,â? I say, bending down so that Jerome can hear me and see my face. â??But youâ??re definitely going to get shot if you go out there with a gun â??â??

â??Youâ??re going to get kidnapped Fay!â? Jerome exclaims, but I just shut the door in his face, hoping he listens to me.

Then, I start to walk towards Ivan, who gives me a sly little smile.

Heâ??s not going to kidnap me. If he wanted me kidnapped, he wouldnâ??t be putting on such a show. No, this is him wanting to impress me.

â??Would you mind?â? I say, coming within about five feet of him. He watched me as I came, his eyes sliding over me from head to foot. â??Youâ??re kind of blocking the road.â?

â??Am I?â? Ivan asks, glancing over his shoulder, feigning ignorance. Then, he turns back to me and gives me his most charming smile. â??My bad.â?

I just raise an eyebrow at him.

â??Where are you off to?â? he asks next, too casual.

â??You know where Iâ??m going, Ivan,â? I say, shaking my head a little, unwilling to play his game. Clearly, if heâ??s here, he knew that I would be coming to Kentâ??s stables this morning. And he knew precisely what time Iâ??d be here, and why I was going.

â??You look cute,â? he says, sliding his hands into his pockets. â??A real equestrian, in that getup. Can you ride?â?

â??Barely,â? I say, looking to my side at the pretty fields by the side of the road. Really, though, I turned away because I didnâ??t want him to see the little smile on my face that came as a result of his compliment. â??But I like my horse. He needs his exercise.â?

My face more under control now, I turn back to him, crossing my arms. â??So do you mind?â?

â??Ah, come on,â? he says, wrinkling his nose at me. â??Let someone else exercise your horse today. Hang out with me instead.â?

â??Seriously?â? I say, tilting my head as I look at him. â??You think that if you block the path towards the thing that I actually want to do, Iâ??ll just cave and go out with you?â?

He gives me a naughty little smirk then. â??Never failed me before.â?

I canâ??t help myself. I laugh. â??Wait, so youâ??ve done this before? Just blocked the road until the girl you like goes out with you?â?

â??Well,â? he says, giving a shrug. â??If someone is being a cock block, then Iâ??ve got to pull the road block.â?
