“I’m sor..” I tried to apologize but was cut off. “No words from you right now, my mate.” he grunted. Alaska was telling me that I should have listened to her, and with his anger right now, I knew she was right.

“NOW!” he yelled. “Would either of you care to plead for your life? Trying to kill an Alpha is treason and punishable by death. A sentence I will gladly carry out, because I don’t need council permission to do so for treason. Ingrid, I honestly don’t give a rats ass on what you have to say. I already know it was to venge my asshole sperm donor’s death. Tamlon, I understand how the mate bond can make you do crazy shit. Things you never thought you were capable of, but I would like to hear it out of your mouth. Why did you participate in trying to kill me? Before you answer, I will let you know that someone in this room, is a human lie detector. So let’s do this the easy way, show we?” Damian spat.

Goddess, I was thankful I wasn’t in their shoes. Damian was like a man possessed, and I knew it was Zion close to the surface doing most the speaking. However, at times, I wasn’t so sure.

Tamlon kept looking back and forth between Ingrid and Damian. He would glance at myself then River, probably trying to figure out if it was one of us who could detect his lie. He finally looked towards the ground, and started to sob.

“I’m sorry, Alpha. I really am. I was being threatened by my mate if I didn’t carry out her orders,” he cried. Ingrid started to swear and scream at her mate. She called him a liar, and spewed horrible things to him to break his spirit. It was obvious he was telling the truth. Damian glanced at me, and I gave a slight nod. I truly believed Tamlon was telling the truth.

Damian then glanced at River, and my brother followed my lead. Though Damian wouldn’t spare him his life for his actions, his mercy would be a quick swift death. His mate however, Damian decided to torture her for awhile before killing her. He decided to put her in a cell, and over weeks, forcefully feed her silver. Slowly killing her wolf, and only when her wolf was gone, would he kill her human form.

To me it sounded like a miserable way to die, and a little extreme. It could have possibly not been her wolfs fault. Humans don’t always listen to their wolf. I am perfect example of that. I felt I should say something to defend her wolf, but Alaska warned me that I was already on thin ice with him. She was right, but I still couldn’t let him torture a innocent wolf. However, I didn’t want to go behind his back and contact mom to come and find out.

When he was ready to leave, he stood and grabbed my arm, dragging me out of the cell house. I led him to where the car was, and he pretty much shoved me inside of it. He sped off towards the house, and his hands gripped the wheel so tight that he could’ve snapped it in half.

“Damian?” I called out to him. He ignored me until he stopped in front of the pack house. Still seething with anger he turned to me. “Alette, I asked you to do one simple thing. One! You disobeyed me not only as your mate, but also as your Alpha. Do you know how that makes me look? Don’t ever do that again. Do you understand?” he asked. I nodded my head and tried to apologize again.

He got out of the car and walked inside, leaving me there. Why do I have to be so stubborn?

*Maddix POV*

Arriving at Spirit Mountain this morning had a heavy feeling to it. Damian was being short with my sister, and she seemed to look defeated. I’m not sure what happened last night when they got back, but it must have been intense. I tried to talk to Alette, but she assured me everything would be alright.

Damian finally told me what happened, and I understood why he was upset. However, to be this angry about her not listening to him, and eavesdropping on the interrogation, was a little overboard to me. I understand he doesn’t want her exposed to the harshness of being Alpha, but he has to remember she is his Luna. There is no hiding her from it, she needs to be a part of it all. Good, bad and ugly. They can’t run a pack as a team otherwise.

“Damian, bro, I get it, I do. I hate that Riley has to be exposed to so much, especially while she was pregnant with Sterling. You have to let her in, and help you through shit though. You are a team, you have to work through things as a team,” I told him. I knew I was right, but honestly, I felt a little hypocritical even saying that to him. I haven’t been the best mate or father lately, and it’s all because I was taking everything on myself.

Damian and I talked for well over an hour about things that were bothering him, and finally we got to the root of the problem. He felt inferior to her, and he felt putting on a strong front would help him feel better. It was more so who her parents were, and how she was raised to be a strong person and a stronger wolf. I reassured him that she doesn’t seem him as inferior and neither should he. They were equals through and through, and nobody but him saw it as anything less.

He seemed to feel better, and I told him I needed to go get Riley so we could get food in us. He thanked me for our talk, and then I left to find my mate. He must have asked my sister to come to his office, because I passed her in the hallway. I asked if she was alright, and she nodded her head with a small smile. I hope he does the right thing and apologizes to her.

Riley was already in the dining hall with the babies when I arrived there. She had just sat Willow in a high chair, and Sterling was in his sling that she had wrapped around her. I bent over and kissed her on the forehead, and asked what she would like to eat. After she told me, I went to the buffet to fill our plates. I wanted to have a discussion with my mate while we ate, but when I arrived back to our table, we had guests.

“Hey Buck, hey Micah,” I smiled. Micah stood up and gave me a hug, and I shook Buck’s hand. Poor Micah looked as if she was ready to pop. Buck had an Omega make their plates, and once it arrived we all ate together, and made small talk about the kids. Although I didn’t get to speak to my mate about how I was feeling then, it was nice to just be together. Seeing her laugh with Micah and Buck made it worth it.
