Filed To Story: Their Bullied and Broken Mate by Teri Petry
“Maddix, I have a report from Peter. I know it’s supposed to be confidential, and maybe Alette will talk to you about it later. However, she admitted that it wasn’t the fact of what happened, because she was drugged and couldn’t have fought him off no matter what due to the drugs. It is more so that she feels now that she is ‘tarnished’, and that Damian will never look at her the same. She feels like she is a burden to him now.” mom explained.
I understood why mom wanted me to know. She was more than likely hoping I would talk to Damian. However, I had my reservations about it. If I spoke to Damian about her sessions, he would most definitely go straight to Alette. I will keep that secret for now, and hope that she will speak to me or Damian soon.
I was so happy to see Phoenix and my little brother River here. I missed them more than I thought. River turns 18 in a week, and is taking over our curator/librarian position. Maizey turned out not to be his mate, and I think he was a little bummed about it. Her mate ended up being one of River’s friends from school.
Everyone was hanging out on the patio near the garden when my phone rang. I would have ignored it if George’s name hadn’t popped up on the screen. I clicked on the answer button and said, “Alpha Maddix speaking.” The line was silent for a minute, and I said hello again in case he didn’t hear me. “Maddix, we have trouble.” he whispered. “George? Why are you whispering?” I asked.
He maintained his whisper, but replied, “We are under attack, Maddix. I am in the packhouse right now trying to get all the women into the safe rooms. There are so many Maddix. It’s not just rogues,” he said before the line was cut off. FUCK! What do I do? I’m almost 2 hours away.
My dad, Loki, gets on the phone and calls my uncle Jason. He explains what’s going on and Jason tells him that he is rounding up his warriors and on their way. My dads also jumped into action, and I apologized for having to leave so abruptly. River, Pheonix, Buck and Damian insist on coming with us, so Damian leaves Caleb in charge.
“I’m sorry my love, I have to go. It’s our pack,” I explained to Riley. She just smiled and kissed my cheek. “You don’t have to explain, sweetheart. I expect no less from you,” she replied.
Alette was not so understanding. Her fear of Damian leaving, to fight no less, sent her into a spiral. My mom stepped in and assured him she would be fine, and thanked him for going with her men. After comforting my sister the best he could, he jumped into the car with us.
I noticed River acting odd the whole ride. I couldn’t tell if it was nerves or if something was bothering him, so I just asked. “What’s up with you, little brother?” He looked at me like I had just committed a cardinal sin. “What makes you think something is wrong?” he replied. I nudged him and said, “You act like I just met you River. I know when something is bothering you. It’s a big brother’s job.”
He sighed and finally told me what was going on. “I found my mate, but didn’t acknowledge them. I’m afraid to,” he explained. I gave him a weird look and asked, “Who is it and why would you be afraid??” He looked down into his lap and picking at his fingers. “It’s the Gamma. I think his name is Caleb. I know he knows too, but neither of us approached each other. I don’t think he wants me,” he answered.
Shit, this was a whole mess. We weren’t too far out, so I tried to link up with my mom. Luckily, it worked. I explained what River had just told me, and asked her if she could speak to Caleb. She said that she would, but as of right now, we need to concentrate on what we have left to do.
I felt a little better after talking to her, and I told River what mom said. He looked embarrassed, but thanked me anyway. With Buck driving, it didn’t take us long at all to reach Blood Moon. Two hours turned into just over an hour. We didn’t even drive fully to the pack house. Once we got through the gates, we got out of the car and all of us shifted.
I had never seen River’s wolf, but he was humongous. I think he was tied with Buck as the largest wolf I have ever seen. River was the first to take off towards the fight. He was moving so fast that I had a hard time keeping up with him. Jason and his crew must have gotten there just before us, and were starting to get the best of those who were attacking us.
We joined in the fight, and when those attacking saw my dads, Jason, Damian and myself together, fighting as a unit, they came for us. We were ready, and didn’t let them fully get to us before we started to attack them. I was able to link Bradley, our new head warrior, and tell him to make sure some were kept alive. I needed to know who and why they were here.
It took hours to get everything under control, and looking around the pack grounds, I knew we had been hit hard. There were tons of bodies. I heard a howl from the distance signaling the battle had ended. I shifted back to my human form and looked at the carnage. I saw people I grew up with, and those I didn’t recognize. I started to walk towards the pack house, and there was one body that brought me to my knees.
“No, no!” I cried out. I pulled the body to me, and sobbed into his hair. I pray that George and Henry won’t walk upon me right now. The body of Jack was laid across my lap. His throat had been ripped out. Jack was like a little brother to me too, and seeing his lifeless body tore my heart to pieces.
*Maddix POV*
When George and Henry arrived at where I was holding Jack, I was still sobbing. I kept apologizing to them both, because I should have been there when the attack started. The situation with Alette has really kept me away from my pack. I’ve neglected my duties, and George has had to pick up all my slack.
