Alexander was already retired and no longer took note of the happenings around him. He also disliked handling people and affairs. Hence, he generally would not attend his relatives’ or friends’ events. He would just let Halston handle them.
No one ordinary could deliver an invitation card to Guajardo Manor. Francine’s expression changed after she read it, so it wouldn’t be that simple.
“Let me have a look.” Alexander snatched the invitation card away when Francine dropped her guard. When he read the large gilded words on the invitation card, his expression turned livid just like hers.
“How… How could this be?!” He said the same thing as Francine.
He couldn’t help it–he and Francine still felt that Flossie was still a part of their family though she had divorced Halston. To them, she was still his wife. Although they argued with each other, they could still remarry as they were still single.
Yet now, Flossie was about to marry Justin from the Baldwin family.
Alexander smoothed his chest, infuriated. “Is she taking revenge on us? Why is she marrying Justin? Doesn’t she know that our families fell out with the Baldwins back then? We even vowed to never get in touch with each other!”
He felt that Flossie was obedient, virtuous, prudent, and sensible. She was a smart daughter-in-law; she would never do such a rebellious thing and humiliate the Guajardo family.
After calming herself down, Francine analyzed, “It must be fake! I know it. She must have resented Halston for cheating on her, so she used such a method to express her dissatisfaction to force him to win her back.”
“But they’ve already printed the invitation cards. Plus, the engagement ceremony is pretty big news. They invited all great families from all over the world. Based on their bad temper, they wouldn’t trifle with their reputation, even for a trick.”
Alexander was fully aware of the grudges between the Baldwin, Ellsworth, and Guajardo families.
Even so, they didn’t hate each other that much. They were just acting out of spite and wouldn’t befriend each other as long as the others didn’t take the first step to make peace.
For many years, the Ellsworth and Guajardo families were close while the Baldwin family stayed at North City independently. The Baldwin family secretly competed against the Ellsworth and Guajardo families.
Now, Flossie was about to marry the enemy of the Guajardo family. If it wasn’t finalized, the Baldwin family wouldn’t have spread the news.
If anything went wrong, everyone would feel that the Huns had defeated the Baldwins.
“Whatever! It’s just an invitation card for an engagement party. We just have to come up with a way to stop Flossie from marrying Justin,” Francine said.
Francine was confident in Flossie. She felt that Flossie and Halston sincerely loved each other deeply, and their romance wouldn’t be over that easily.
Unfortunately, they cared too much about their reputation and were stubborn. Someone needed to resolve that stalemate.
“You made it sound so easy. Flossie is single. If she wants to marry, she can marry anyone. We’re just her ex-in-laws. We can’t meddle in her affairs.” Alexander shook his head. He was full of remorse since he felt that the sail had shipped.
He blamed his insensible son instead of Flossie. Halston didn’t cherish such a good woman-served him right to lose her!
“We can’t do anything about it, but our son can!” Francine said confidently. “They’re always caught up with each other, and they can’t stop loving each other.”
“What do you mean?”
“Halston can win Flossie back as long as he does something.”
“But they’ve ended up like this. If they wanted to remarry, they would have long done so. You made it sound too easy,” Alexander said, doubtful.
“I’m sure they wouldn’t do anything if things were still the same, but it’s different now. If Halston is still indifferent, he’ll lose his beloved woman. I bet he’ll do something about it.”
Francine was certain that she understood Halston well. After all, he was her son. She knew what was on his mind. On the surface, he claimed that he had given Flossie up, but he would go mad if he learned that his woman was about to marry another man.
They were still discussing it when Halston came back from the company. He looked calm and expressionless. Francine calmed herself down and gave Alexander a hint before walking toward Halston. “You got off work early today. I’m glad! We can dine together on this special day.”
Halston took off his coat and passed it to a servant, his movements elegant. “What’s wrong?”
“Hey, I’m your mother. Can’t I talk to you or get close to you?” Francine held Halston’s arm and sized him up. Then, she clicked her tongue and added, “Look at you! Your figure is great, and you’re handsome. I’m sure all women will fall for you. You’re very charming. But well, it’s because my genes are great!”
“Ahern, ahem!” Alexander felt rather helpless and couldn’t bear to watch it.
His wife was acting. Any sensible person could tell that she wanted to talk to Halston about something,
“Just say whatever you want.” Halston wore a poker face but sounded impatient. “I won’t ask you if you don’t want to tell me.”
“No, no. Yes, there’s something I want to tell you!” Francine was awkward and took some time before asking tentatively, “Did you receive anything special, or watch any special news at the company today?”
“I attended a meeting for the whole day today and didn’t watch the news.” Halston frowned. “Is there any news on your side?”
“Uh, well…”
Suddenly, Francine found it hard to tell Halston the truth.
After all, she knew better than anyone how much he loved Flossie. However, Flossie was going to marry another man. It must be a big blow for Halston.
“What’s wrong?” Halston narrowed his eyes and studied Francine, who was acting weird.
“Nothing! Let’s eat. It’s the New Year. Let’s eat together.” Alexander found it cruel to expose the news to Halston since it was the family reunion day, so he changed the topic of the conversation.
“Fine.” Halston stopped raising questions and walked straight toward the dining table.
Francine watched his back and hesitated. She was about to speak up when Alexander held her wrist. “Calm down.” Alexander whispered to her, “Let’s eat first. Don’t ruin the New Year for him.”
“Yes, you’re right. I should calm down.”
After some contemplation, she felt that Alexander was considerate. She nodded and decided to wait until after the
New Year.
It was a grand feast.
Usually, the Guajardo Manor would be very lively during the New Year. All the members of the Guajardo family would attend the party.
However, Timothy disliked noise this year. It might be because he was getting older. He wanted to have a quiet dinner with just his close family members.
Hence, there were only four people at the dining table though it was the New Year. It appeared rather quiet and cheerless.
When it was time, Timothy slowly came downstairs while using a walking stick to support himself.
After a heart transplant surgery a few years ago, he was considered quite strong and healthy. He would be fine as long as he was calm and strictly followed the routines arranged by his therapist.
Alexander and Francine exchanged looks and agreed to keep the marriage between Flossie and Justin from both Halston and Timothy.
If not, things would get very troublesome if Timothy learned about that. If it affected his health, it would get more troublesome.
“Grandpa.” When Halston saw Timothy come downstairs, he politely bowed to Timothy and considerately walked over to support the latter.
Recently, their relationship got better. Timothy gradually accepted the fact that Halston and Flossie had gotten a divorce, but he still felt that they sincerely loved each other and would reconcile with each other one day.
Thus, he took an indirect means. He wanted to persuade Halston to win Flossie back. Then, they could remarry each other.
“Good boy.” After taking his seat, Timothy patted the back of Halston’s hand gently. “It’s the New Year. Don’t you find something is lacking here?”
“What’s lacking?” Halston calmly questioned.
“Well…”
