“No, they don’t hate you.” Justin kept holding Flossie’s hand tightly to reassure her. “They were mad at first, but they forgave you and missed you very much. They always urged me to win you back. They claimed only you were qualified to be the future matriarch of my family. Honestly, I wouldn’t pester you like this if they didn’t urge me that way!”
“Really?” Flossie was surprised.
The Baldwin family appeared solemn and formal. It was puzzling for them to accept a woman who had once humiliated them.
After some contemplation, Flossie couldn’t figure out what was so unique about her. She wondered why they favored her that much.
“Well, that’s not entirely true.”
“Huh?”
Justin smiled. “They did urge me to win you back, but I’m not telling the truth when I said I wouldn’t pester you. It’s not important whether they like you or not. All that’s important is that I love you very much with all my heart.”
Justin quickened his pace. The figures of the three people waiting for them seemed clearer now. Flossie saw three faces, grinning brightly.
“Oh, Flossie! You’ve finally arrived! Are you tired or thirsty? Would you like to grab a bite?” Austin asked Flossie enthusiastically, maintaining a bright smile.
“Huh?” Terrified, Justin took a few steps back with Flossie. “Grandpa, don’t come over!”
“What do you mean, brat? Do you want to get a beating?” Austin snarled. He immediately put away his smile and glared at Justin, waving his walking stick threateningly.
“No… I’ve lived with you for so many years, but I never saw you smile. Now, you’re smiling so brightly. It’s frightening!” Justin swallowed and added carefully, “Act normal. It’s better if you are serious.”
“How dare you!” Austin, unable to hold himself back, raised his walking stick and hit Justin’s back hard.
Justin stood upright, neither yelling in pain nor frowning. His parents stood behind him, seemingly used to it. They didn’t stop Austin, either.
Flossie watched the scene and found it horrifying. “Don’t we have to do anything?”
“It’s fine. Grandpa used to do this,” Justin said, smiling at Flossie. He even smoothed his hair indifferently. After all, physical punishment was normal to the Baldwin family.
“Hmph, brat! You always ruin my reputation.” Austin finally put away his walking stick after he got tired from beating Justin up. At the same time, he kept his abnormal smile. “No, I never do that. You’re just forgetting yourself.” Justin shrugged indifferently, then added seriously, “Your image is a solemn and fierce old man, but you’re suddenly acting so kind and friendly. It’s strange and freaky. You can ask Flossie if you scared her or not.”
Everyone looked at Flossie in unison.
Austin asked Flossie, “Flossie, did I scare you?”
“Uh…” Facing Austin, Flossie was unsure whether to lie or to tell the truth.
With Flossie’s silence, Austin took it upon himself to speak for her. “Look! She didn’t think I was freaky. I’m sure she likes me very much.”
The rest, seeing that, couldn’t refute him. They even echoed his words. “Yeah, Flossie loves you best, just like how Red Riding Hood loves the wolf that pretended to be her grandma.” “Hmph! You know nothing! This is how Flossie and I get along with each other.” Austin claimed that others did not know him. He got angry and acted immaturely, which was cute. “Hahaha!” Flossie laughed heartily upon seeing how they got along with each other, no longer as anxious or worried as she had been in the beginning.
“Look. She laughed! I know that she loves us very much,” Austin went on.
Austin was sincerely happy when he saw Flossie’s relaxed smile.
Flossie looked a lot like Maurice. Given how he missed and respected Maurice, Austin wouldn’t treat Flossie unfairly, even if he didn’t wish for other things.
“I’m sure she likes us.”
Sophia walked over and held Flossie’s wrist intimately. They walked forward calmly and steadily.
“Flossie, let’s forget about our past conflict. You know what kind of a person Dad is. Yes, he’s fierce, but he’s not vengeful. Since you came back to us now, we’ll still welcome and love you as we once did. Take my home as your home. Take Dad, Jack, and me as your grandpa-in- law and parents-in-law. Promise me.”
It had been a long time since Flossie experienced such a warm feeling. It was the happiness of a happy family, and it overwhelmed her.
Endless warmth filled her, and she nodded firmly.
“I’m thankful for your forgiveness and that you’re willing to accept me again. I thought it over before I decided to come. I won’t break my promise, and I’ll work hard to be a part of your family,” Flossie said; her words were a reminder for herself and reassured the Baldwin family.
At that point, Flossie knew she could never break her word. If she did, she would never forgive herself, let alone the strict Baldwin family.
“With your promise, our wait isn’t wasted!” Sophia became teary and was moved.
“Okay, stop being so melancholic. I’m sure she’s tired from the journey. Let’s go home and let her have some rest,” Justin immediately interrupted his mother when he noticed her talking with Flossie without stopping.
He was also worried about making everyone awkward. From his understanding, a tough woman like Phoenix hated being emotional.
“Yes, let’s go home. I got a lot of things for you to relax. Rest well, then we’ll talk about other stuff,” Sophia said meaningfully, patting Flossie’s shoulders gently.
They rode in high-end cars, returning to the Baldwin residence majestically.
Flossie had been here before; it was a classic, majestic manor with pavilions and towers. The environment was meticulously cared for, indicating how wealthy the Baldwin family was. Anyone would feel very comfortable living here, even if they did nothing.
Flossie’s room was on the west of the mansion, and came with a very nice name-the West Chamber. It was an individual space in the mansion equipped with a study, kitchen, washroom, bathroom, and storage room.
“Flossie, go to your bedroom. I have a lot of great things for you. When you’ve done enjoying yourself, it’ll be time for dinner. We can talk by then.”
Sophia repeated herself mysteriously as she walked Flossie to the West Chamber.
Justin frowned, feeling that something was amiss. He asked Sophia, “Mom, what are you doing? You can use those tricks on me, but not on Flossie. She might get mad.”
“Nonsense! What trick? You make it sound like I’m full of schemes.” Sophia felt wronged and explained angrily, “I heard from you that Flossie has suffered a lot lately, so I got something to help her relax. You make it sound like I’m trying to plot against her. Stop ruining my reputation!”
Justin was still doubtful. “Hmph! I don’t trust you.”
“It’s fine, I’m not scared,” Flossie replied with a smile before going to her bedroom.
Flossie entered the bedroom alone.
“Let me go with you.” Worried, Justin wanted to follow her into the room but was stopped by Sophia.
“Stop right here! The things inside aren’t for men. We should just wait outside.”
“What are you talking about?” Justin became more curious and worried. He turned and glared at Sophia. “Mom, you’d better don’t overdo it. You know it’s not easy for me to persuade Flossie to come. You and Grandpa are horrible. He smiled ferociously, and you kept doing extra things. What if you guys scare her off?”
“I told you, it’s just stuff to help her relax. I won’t scare her off!” Sophia grew impatient because of her paranoid son and said grumpily, “Go in and check it out if you must. But if you ruin it, I’ll…”
“Well, I…” Justin walked forward and placed his hand on the doorknob of the bedroom door. However, he hesitated when he was about to open it.
He wondered if there were things unsuitable for him to see. If there were, it would be very awkward if he barged in impulsively.
Flossie was amazed by what she had seen in the bedroom. There was a row of young women standing in there in the same uniform.
“Hello, Ms. Ellsworth. We’re here at your service.”
One of the women bowed to Flossie respectfully and introduced all of them. “We’re the top in our field.”
“I’m Holly Truman, a top massage therapist.”
“I’m Nova Everson, a top beautician.”
“I’m Mia Crosby, a foot therapist.”
