Andrew was Mateo’s most capable subordinate. Most of the time, he would do things for Mateo if it was inconvenient for the latter to step forward.
Liam was no fool, either. Since Andrew was there to stop him from going in, it could only be Mateo’s order rather than Benjamin’s.
“Mr. Osborne. Regardless of what you say, that’s my order. No one can go into the third jail. Those who break the rules will be punished severely, Andrew said with a fake smile.
“Hmph! Severely?” Liam scoffed. “Why don’t you show me just how severe?”
Liam’s eyes flashed coldly; he quickly fished out his gun and pressed it against Andrew’s forehead. “Are you talking about this?”
Andrew raised his hands and sighed helplessly. “Mr. Osborne, I just did what I was told. It’s useless if you make things difficult for me. Even if you shoot me, you can’t go in, can you?”
Andrew’s subordinates aimed their weapons at Liam, and the atmosphere became tense. A careless mistake might start a war.
“Do you think I don’t care to shoot you?” Liam was about to pull the trigger, his face fierce.
When Andrew heard the bullet being loaded, he broke out in a cold sweat and panicked. “Hey, don’t!”
“Get out of the way if you’re scared!” Liam growled, pushing the gun against Andrew’s forehead tightly. “Okay, okay! I’ll step aside.”
Andrew, trembling, ordered his subordinates to retreat. Then, he led Liam to the third jail.
Liam hurried to the room where he had gone to visit Leia and Flossie previously. Much to his dismay, he found that it was vacant.
“What happened? Where are they?” Anxiety gripped him as he interrogated Andrew fiercely.
“What…? They?’ Andrew asked with a shaky voice, dumbfounded.
“Stop fucking pretending! Who do you think I’m talking about? Where are they? Spill it now!”
“I… I don’t know!” Terrified, Andrew’s lips tumed pale and he began to sob. “I just got an order to guard the door of the third jail and stop anyone from going in. I have no idea who was locked in here. I thought it’d be used to keep the recently arrived organs!”
“Stop fucking playing dumb! You work for Mateo, but you’re saying that you had no idea who was locked here? Stop lying!”
Liam, furious, kept cursing. In a mad frenzy, he grabbed Andrew and kicked the latter hard.
“This is your last chance! Tell me where they are! If you don’t tell me, I’ll fucking shoot you on the count of three!” “I don’t know, Mr. Osbome! Please show some mercy!”
“Three, two…” Liam gnashed his teeth as he counted. The gun against Andrew’s forehead came strong and hard on him, threatening his life.
“Please don’t kill me, Mr. Osbome!” Andrew closed his eyes as his legs turned weak. The spot between his legs turned wet as he peed his pants.
Seeing that, Liam put the gun down and glared disdainfully at Andrew. “Tsk, what a coward! You’re as cunning and gutless as your boss.”
Liam was now convinced that Andrew knew nothing. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have peed his pants and still refused to expose the truth.
Things would be complicated if that was the case.
“Who asked you to guard this place?” Liam demanded again, narrowing his eyes.
After a careful analysis, he felt that the goal of making Andrew guard this place was to complicate matters and stall for time. After all, there was no one in the jail. Whoever gave Andrew that order must have taken Flossie and Leia away.
“It’s… It’s Mr. Jenkins! He told me to guard the door of the third jail and stop anyone from going in.” Andrew trembled, his hands raised, submitting himself to Liam. “I made a huge mistake just now. I’m sure Mr. Jenkins won’t forgive me. Can you…please beg for mercy for me by then?”
Andrew was too cowardly to resist, choosing to strive for a little chance of survival. He hoped that Liam could kindly defend him before Benjamin got him killed.
“Did Mr. Jenkins give you such an order?” Liam looked suspiciously at Andrew, wondering about the authenticity of his words.
“Yes, he did! I’m under your mercy. I don’t have to lie to you. You can ask him yourself,” Andrew confessed fearfully, looking as if he were about to cry.
“That’s unnecessary.” Liam put away his gun and coldly exited the third jail.
In a matter of minutes, he reached Mateo’s bedroom and kicked it open without hesitation.
The guard failed to stop him. Fearful, he said to Mateo, “Boss… Mr. Osborne would like to meet you.”
Mateo had just washed up and was lying in bed, about to doze off. When he heard that, he woke up with a start and sat up, dumbfounded. “What’s going on? Who wants to see me?”
“It’s Mr. Os-“
Before the guard could finish talking, Liam shoved him away. He quickly went to Mateo’s bed and grabbed the latter’s collar.
“Mateo, just fucking tell me what you want! Do you want me to kill you?”
“Save that question for yourself.” Mateo was still in pajamas, sleepy. He snorted, ‘You barged into my room in the middle of the night. This is beyond rude! I don’t care if you kill me.”
“You told Benjamin, didn’t you?” Liam snarled fiercely at Mateo.
“What did I tell him?” Mateo glared grumpily at Liam, disdainful. “Just get straight to the point. It’s in the middle of the night! Don’t accuse me without any proof. I don’t want to beat around the bush, either. Let’s fight and get it over with!”
“Was I wrong to accuse you?” Liam’s eyes flashed icily. “How dare you claim that you didn’t tell Benjamin about what Leia and Flossie did?”
“You’re out of your mind!” Mateo finally understood why Liam was making a scene, but he felt wronged. “If I told him, I wouldn’t wait for you to come here and bother me. Think! I didn’t get what I wanted, so why should I tell him?”
Mateo planned to keep Leia and Flossie to negotiate terms with Liam. Since he hadn’t done that yet, he would never foolishly alert Benjamin. Otherwise, things might spiral out of his control. He might even get into unnecessary trouble.
It was easy logic, but Liam failed to see through it. This man was a short-sighted fool indeed.
“So, you didn’t tell Benjamin about what happened between Flossie, Leia, and Luneth’s son?” Liam repeated, wanting to make himself clear.
Liam didn’t purposely want to make things difficult for Mateo, but the whole conflict was directly linked to him. What’s more, Leia and Flossie were gone. Liam had no idea who to go to other than Mateo.
“Didn’t I make myself clear? If I told Benjamin about this, I’d get nothing out of it. I have yet to reach a consensus with you. I don’t have to get rid of my backup plan so eagerly.”
Mateo felt helpless; he was no longer vigilant toward Liam, and instead shot Liam a disdainful gaze. ‘Aren’t you always smart? Why are you acting like a fool now? You look lost. Just stop pestering me.”
“Does it really have nothing to do with you?” Liam narrowed his eyes and observed Mateo’s expression, wondering the authenticity of the latter’s words.
“I just caught them. Don’t you know where they are? As long as we reach an agreement, I can let them go,” Mateo said, giving Liam a hint.
After having a meal with Liam that night, Mateo regretted his actions. Flossie and Leia came with great supporters, so it was risky for him to use them as hostages. If he failed to handle Liam and made Halston or Xavier his enemy, things would get troublesome. It wasn’t worth it.
After drinking, Mateo wanted to let them go but ultimately decided against it. He wanted to make Liam bow down first. Besides, it would seem very embarrassing to let them go right away. Hence, he decided to keep them for two to three days before letting them go. By then, he wouldn’t be that embarrassed, even though he might fail to get what he wanted.
“What? They aren’t even in there!” Liam finally believed that Mateo didn’t have a clue what was going on. He coldly let go of Mateo, dispirited.
“If they’re not in the jail, then where are they?” Mateo grew nervous too. After dwelling on it, he looked at Liam vigilantly. “Are you trying to shift the blame to me?”
Liam was flabbergasted. Confused and uncertain, he glared at Mateo in annoyance.
“You told me they’re protected by someone amazing! You kept fighting me, but you failed to win every time. You purposely hide your sister to shift the blame to me. Then, you can use their protectors to get rid of me. Am I right? “Mateo said.
After that analysis, his face twisted in apprehension.
“You’re ruthless! You’re trying to get me killed!”
