“What’s there to talk about since you guys don’t know each other?” Liam refuted; he didn’t agree with that arrangement. His eyes gleamed icily.
‘That’s why we need to get to know each other. Hurry up and get out of the car. We girls need to talk. It’s not good for a man to be here.” Amber insisted on sitting with Flossie, and pushed Liam out of the car.
Helpless, Liam got into another car.
Amber sat close to Flossie and bowed to check Flossie’s foot, which had been injured by a beast trap. Feeling sorry for Flossie, she tried to blow at the injury.
‘This tribe is used to hurting and roasting people. I’m sure you’re in a lot of pain.”
“I’m fine.” Flossie looked calm, feeling as though her previous experience was a dream. “I’m tough. Plus, I’ve run into more ridiculous things and suffered more serious injuries. This isn’t a big deal.’
Leia listened nearby, and muttered, “You can’t compare it that way Those were old injuries. And you’re injured now, regardless of how big or small it is. It’ll bring you pain no matter what. You can’t quantify them like that.”
She felt very sorry for Flossie, so she didn’t try to stop Liam when the latter declared that he wanted to burn the tribe down. She herself wanted to massacre the entire tribe.
They were siblings as well as Flossie’s loyal friends. They would make anyone who mistreated Flossie pay a heavy price.
“Leia’s right. We can’t be careless no matter how big or small the injury is.” Amber fished out the medical kit in the car, squatted in front of Flossie, and started bandaging Flossie’s wound attentively.
“Hey, you don’t have to do this…” Flossie felt embarrassed, and wanted to stop Amber.
After all, Amber was Benjamin’s only daughter and he doted her to bit. But here Amber was, squatting in front of Flossie and acting like her nurse. It was quite unfair for Amber.
“It’s fine.” Amber looked up, kindness and innocence gleaming in her eyes. She blinked at Flossie and smiled sweetly. “I’ve learned how to do this from a young age. I love treating patients. Plus, this is just an external injury. You’ll be fine with some timely ointment and bandages.”
“Well, thank you.” Flossie was afraid that her leg might be ruined, so she stopped turning Amber down.
Amber kept her head low and meticulously applied ointment to Flossie’s wound. Her delicate hands brought felt itchy on Flossie’s skin.
“Oh, Liam’s blessed to find such a kind and gentle wife like you. I wonder if he deserves you!” Flossie said. Amber stopped, and cracked a bitter smile. “It’s my blessing, but it’s his misfortune. If my dad didn’t force him to marry me, he wouldn’t even look at me. A dazzling man like him is destined to be the best match for a woman like you, Ms. Ellsworth. I’m sure he feels regret over marrying me…”
‘Don’t say that!” Flossie felt sorry for Amber, and wondered if Liam was unreliable. To think he made such a good woman to be so humble. She wondered if he had manipulated Amber.
“You don’t know how unreliable he is! He’s just like a child sometimes, always making a scene and acting shameless. Plus, he loves playing pranks. He’s very childish, and has a terrible temper. He’ll fly into a rage over small things. He’s not as good as you imagine,” Flossie babbled, trying her best to come up with Liam’s shortcomings to boost Amber’s confidence.
When she recalled the past, Flossie felt that Liam was a childish man. He always tagged along with her, and was more immature than Adie and Abby.
“Does Liam act like a child?”
Amber bandaged Flossie’s wound with a beautiful ribbon, indicating her girlish nature. She yearned to see the kind of man Flossie had described.
“He’s a mature older guy, and he’s been with me for such a long time. I’ve never seen him act immature. Though, I’d like to see that!”
She shook her head self-deprecatingly.
“But I don’t think I’ll get the chance to see that. I heard that men would only show their childish side in front of the women they truly loved. He probably likes you so much, he behaved like a child around you.”
“No, you’ve misunderstood again,” Flossie said quickly.
She intended to get rid of Amber’s misunderstanding, but only succeeded in complicating her relationship with Liam even further.
She hurriedly explained, “He just sees me as his friend! I don’t feel anything for him. There’s nothing indecent about us. Really, we’re just close friends.”
“Nah, that’s not true,” Leia intervened. She ignored her future sister-in-law’s feelings and went straight to the point. “Everyone in Beach City knows how much my brother likes you except for you! You don’t have to cover it up. Just be open about it, it’ll save a lot of trouble.”
“Hey, Lei! You…”
Flossie felt helpless and tired. She wasn’t a complete idiot; since it concerned her, she knew what everyone in Beach City thought.
Still, Liam was about to marry Amber soon. It was best to avoid trouble.
“Did I say anything wrong? You were his first love. Although Amber’s going to marry him, you can’t change that fact.”
Leia didn’t think that she had said anything wrong.
She went on firmly, “His affection for you was your blessing. It’s nothing indecent! You don’t have to hide it. I’m sure Amber won’t be bothered by it, right?”
“Ah, I…” Amber stammered.
There was confusion in her eyes as she fell into deep thought. She broke into an awkward smile.
“Honestly,” she said, “you can see if someone likes you from their eyes, even though they can control what they say. Yes, Liam got along with me very well these days. So much so, I thought he might like me a bit. But when I saw him rush to you just now, I finally knew what love was….
“Gem, don’t…say that,” Flossie muttered, feeling like a sinful person.
She had hurt two innocent people at the same time. She felt like she might kill herself because of it.
“How should I put this? Maybe there are many types of love. He loves me in a way, but loves you in another,” she tried to reason. “You two are going to marry each other soon. You’ll be his wife and spend the rest of your life with him. You should trust him and give him more time.”
Flossie had no idea what she could do for them aside from wishing them well with all her heart.
Suddenly, she understood why Liam never told her about his marriage.
She should never have come. Her attendance was no blessing, but instead a curse. She should probably leave…
The car ride was bumpy. At last, they arrived at Benjamin’s fort.
Liam quickly got out of the car and eagerly opened the door where Flossie was. “Don’t move. I’ll carry you inside.”
Without hesitation, he carried Flossie in his arms and instructed his subordinate, “Get Dr. Holmes. Hurry!”
“Liam, put me down! I can walk,” Flossie protested.
She patted Liam’s shoulders, awkward. She didn’t care if she could walk or not, for she found it very inappropriate for him to carry her that way. She felt she should keep some distance from him, regardless if it was for her or Amber’s sake.
‘No, I’m sure you can’t walk unless you want to give your legs up, Liam said, ignoring Flossie’s words. He carried her and walked straight ahead, leaving Amber and Leia behind.
Speechlessness overcame Flossie.
Amber watched Liam’s hurried figure from afar and quietly clenched her fists. She looked downcast. Although she was generous, seeing it still saddened her.
Leia didn’t care about Amber, and even hated the latter. Even so, she found Liam’s actions intolerable. She awkwardly kicked the gravel on the road.
“Uh, don’t take it to heart. Liam’s kind. Plus, Flossie is very important to us. She’s our savior and best friend. Flossie was more or less hurt because of him. It’s normal for him to take care of her,” she said.
“I know.” Amber was flattered to hear it, because she felt that Leia was treating her differently. She nodded firmly. “Don’t worry. I’m not a greedy person. I’m very satisfied to reach this stage with him. I didn’t overestimate myself and assume I could be the most important person to him.”
“Hey, you’re a good woman, but you have bad tastes. Why did you want to be with a carefree person like my brother? He likes to be free and can’t be tied down to a place. You can’t make him settle down. Even if you do, you’ll get exhausted,” Leia said bluntly.
She knew Liam best. When Flossie broke his heart, he started traveling around the world. He acted like he had gone missing, and didn’t care about anything. It infuriated their parents.
At first, Liam was picked to be the heir of the Osborne family. The decision had been finalized. However, their parents picked other children to inherit the family property because he was hard to control. They considered Leia, her five older sisters, and even their father’s illegitimate son.
When Leia’s family forced her to manage some property that she refused to, she would fish out a soft toy that she regarded as Liam and punch it to vent her dissatisfaction.
