Halston was actually underplaying it-Flossie had hot pot frequently, and she ate a lot. Her appetite was very good, so something told him that Leia was lying. He felt that she was definitely hiding something serious.
“You’re lying, aren’t you?” Halston’s expression was frigid as he asked Leia.
“Haha! That’s ridiculous. You didn’t care enough about Flossie and were ignorant about her condition, but you have the nerve to say that I’m lying. Why would I lie for no reason? What good will it do me? I’m not lying, and the person who feels guilty here is the real liar.” Leia didn’t expect that Halston would see through her lies so easily, and started rambling out of nervousness.
After hearing Leia, even Xavier felt like she was hiding something. “Lei, did you have wine? Why are you rambling?” Xavier took a step forward and held Leia’s hand, looking concerned. “Should I take you somewhere to rest? You don’t seem well.” “No, you can save that for yourself. If I don’t seem well, it’s because of your witch. I didn’t slap her enough. Let me slap her, then I’ll be fine.” Leia tried to turn the conversation back to Shirley, and hoped the surgery would end soon because she couldn’t deflect for much longer.
“Ms. Osborne, go ahead and slap me if you want. I won’t complain this time. ” Shirley stepped forward and smoothly wedged herself between Xavier and Leia. Her eyes were watery, and she looked pitiful. “I just don’t want you to be mad at Xavier. He’s been thinking about you all this time, and all he cares about is you. I hope you don’t misunderstand him.” “Oh, great. She’s started another performance.”
Leia rolled her eyes in disgust, then sneered, “You did so many things to ruin the relationship between
Xavier and me, but let me be frank with you-you don’t have to do anything because I’ve already fallen out with him… I promised you before that I would make Xavier loyal to you if you gave up your eyes to
Flossie, but you said that you wanted your eyes more than Xavier. Clearly, you don’t love Xavier that much, so stop pretending that you care so much about him.
“Do I have to sacrifice myself if I love him? Did you do the same since you love him? I know for a fact that you didn’t, and to make things worse, you always behaved arrogantly and tortured Xavier. I never saw you be nice to him. If I were Xavier, I would have ignored you ages ago. I don’t know how you bewitched him. You’re such a pretentious woman, but he stays by your side relentlessly,” Shirley argued rudely. Honestly, she couldn’t bear to see Xavier fawning over Leia since he used to dote on her like that in the past.
Looking at Shirley, Leia mocked, “Yes, I was pretentious, but I know my feelings now. I don’t love
Xavier that much, and I have the guts to admit it. But what about you? You don’t love him, but you pretend you do just to satisfy your selfish needs. Do you think you’re nobler than me?” “I… I…” Shirley was speechless. It would be a loss if she admitted that she didn’t love Xavier, but on the other hand, she didn’t act like she loved him either.
Leia was certainly one of a kind-she could put aside her emotions, but Shirley couldn’t even face her true feelings.
Xavier had been silent the whole time, but finally raised his hand weakly.” Hey, can you guys leave me out of your argument? I have feelings too.” He felt that he was merely a tool for them. In the end, he was the only one who had gotten hurt…
As Shirley and Leia were busy arguing, they didn’t realize that Halston had slowly approached the door of the room. He didn’t believe that Flossie was having an appendectomy, and felt that there was more going on in the room. He tried to push open the door to take a look, but when he placed his hand on the doorknob, Leia noticed what he was doing.
“What are you doing? You can’t go in!” Leia rushed over and stood between the door and Halston, blocking him from looking inside. She had promised Flossie to hold off the others, and she would do it even if Halston got offended and she got into trouble.
“This is my wife’s house, and my wife is in there. I have no idea what she’s going through. Can’t I go in and take a look?” Halston’s words were polite, but his tone was dangerous.
Leia had anticipated that he would lash out, and she knew that if she kept this up, things would turn sour. Nonetheless, she spread her hands out to block his path and said stubbornly, “Over my dead body! I’ll never back off!” “Is that so? Then I won’t go easy on you!” Since politeness had gotten him nowhere, Halston had to resort to force. He picked Leia up and hurled her to the side.
“Ah! What are you doing?” Leia screamed as she sailed through the air.
Just as she was about to hit the floor, Xavier rushed over and caught her.
Both of them tumbled to the floor, and Xavier scowled at Halston. “You’re going overboard, Halston! Lei is a girl. You could have seriously injured her!” If he hadn’t caught Leia, she might have injured her spine and been paralyzed forever. He didn’t expect the usually rational and polite Halston to do such a reckless thing.
Halston glanced at the two people on the floor and said indifferently, “I warned her, but she insisted on making things difficult. If my woman got hurt because of her stopping me, then her injury would mean nothing compared to what would happen.” He tried to open the door, his gaze icy. He looked inhuman, and he had lost all rationality because of his concern for Flossie. His subconscious told him that Flossie was suffering great pain, and he couldn’t wait any longer.
Owen had just finished up, and came out the moment Halston opened the door. When he saw Halston outside, he frowned in disdain. “Do you think this is a market? What’s with all the noise? Do you know you’d affect the people in here?” “My wife… What surgery did she have? Why didn’t you inform me?”
Halston immediately snarled at Owen.
“That’s patient confidentiality. Why do I have to tell you?” Owen sounded righteous. He tilted his head a little and instructed the nurse handling the surgery table behind him, “Don’t forget to put Ms. Ellsworth on an IV drip later. Her body is weak after the surgery. Don’t be careless.”
The nurse had cleaned up the surgery table. Flossie was lying on it motionlessly, waiting for the anesthetic to pass.
At first, Owen said that Flossie could have a medical abortion because the fetus was still small. But after the check-up, he found that the fetus was adhered quite firmly, so eventually he needed to perform dilation and a curettage to clear everything.
Flossie was afraid of pain, so she chose regional anesthesia and let Owen handle it. Now, after everything was over, grief hit her like a wave. She couldn’t even protect her baby. Lying on the surgery table, she could hear the fight outside, and tears ran down her cheeks.
“Confidentiality?” Halston tried his best to control his temper and bit out,” There are no secrets between
US. I have the right to know everything about her.” At first, he didn’t think it was serious, but judging by
Leia and Owen’s behaviour, he suspected something bigger was afoot. He couldn’t afford to be careless.
“If you want to know, go ask Ms. Ellsworth. I don’t want to offend anyone, so I’ll just get back to work,”
Owen deflected and tried to leave.
“Stop!” Halston blocked Owen, determined to get an explanation.
“Hey, I’m just a doctor. Don’t pull me into your marital issues…” Owen anxiously wiped away his sweat, caught in a dilemma.
“Halston, stop making things difficult for Dr. Wagner,” Flossie called out weakly. She knew how persistent
Halston was, and knew she could no longer keep this a secret. She didn’t want to trouble anyone.
“Dear, how are you feeling?” Halston instantly stopped snarling, and looked like a tame kitten. He hurried over to the surgery table to check on Flossie, frowning when he couldn’t tell what surgery she had.
“I’m fine. Dr. Wagner just took something out of my body,” Flossie spoke calmly, but there were tear stains at the corners of her eyes.
“What… happened?” Halston glanced at the bloody medical equipment in the dustbin nearby. He had a bad feeling he knew what it was, but he didn’t want to think about it. Flossie always shared everything with him, whether good or bad, and they would always make decisions together. Surely she wouldn’t treat him like a fool and hide it from him.
Flossie ignored Halston’s question and turned to the nurse standing nearby.” I’m tired. Can you help me back to my room?” The effects of the anesthetic had passed, and she could move, but she was still weak from the abortion and poisoning. She had no energy to handle Halston, and all she wanted to do was sleep.
Halston wasn’t blind-he could tell that Flossie was very uncomfortable.
Besides, it was obvious she didn’t want to tell him about the surgery, so he just controlled his emotions and stopped interrogating her. Taking a deep breath, he finally said, “Let me carry you.”
Seeing that, the nurse immediately said, “Thank you, Mr. Guajardo. Since Ms. Ellsworth has just had surgery, she might experience some light spotting, but it’s normal.”
“Spotting?” Halston stiffened. He wanted to ask what surgery could cause that, but he stopped himself.
He had been trying to get to the bottom of it, but it seemed like Flossie didn’t want him to know. He didn’t want to make her feel bad, so he decided he would ask her about it when she was feeling better.
The priority right now was to help Flossie get better.
He carefully carried Flossie out of the surgery room. He had no idea what had happened, but Flossie had lost a lot of weight. In the past, she felt like a kitten in his arms, but now, she was as light as a feather. It made him feel like she would wither away if he wasn’t careful.
“Flossie!” Leia had been waiting outside, and when she saw them come out, she quickly rushed over.
Heartbroken and guilty, she stammered, “I’m sorry. I… I didn’t manage to stop him.”
“Silly, you don’t have to apologize. He’s determined, and I knew that you wouldn’t be able to stop him. I should be apologizing to you for stressing you out.” Flossie smiled and comforted Leia gently. She could hear the fight outside during the surgery just now, and Flossie was already very grateful that Leia had managed to block Halston until the surgery was over.
“Hey, we’re besties. You don’t have to say that…” Leia followed Halston, wanting to go to the bedroom on the second floor.
However, Xavier immediately gripped her wrist to stop her. “They have a lot of things to discuss right now. Why are you trying to tag along? This is between them.”
“It’s none of your business!” Leia glared at Xavier and jerked her hand away. “How could someone as insensible as Halston take good care of Flossie? I’ll be worried if I can’t take care of her.”
“Just rest. Flossie doesn’t need you taking care of her right now.”
Leia’s eyes blazed in defiance. “What does she need then?”
“Only Halston will know.” Xavier shook his head helplessly. Was Leia a third wheel in her previous life?
Why did she always want to meddle in their romance?
Leia hesitated after taking a few steps, realizing that what Xavier said made sense. Flossie had just lost her and Halston’ baby-only he could share that grief with her. As Flossie’s friend, Leia couldn’t provide her with that kind of consolation.
