“Enough! You,” He points his finger in Flora’s face, his skin turning red. “Get your ass removed from the stage or become ash! And You!”
He stomps toward me, his massive frame towering over me as he puffs out steam from his nose, reminding me of a train gaining traction.
“You will either mate with me or my son. The choice is yours. Just know Teiran seems to be softer at mating than I am.”
“No.” I say, rolling my shoulders back, finding my strength as Flora backs me up, a giddy grin on her lips.
Teiran watches her with awe in his eyes and for a moment I see a flicker there. Is there any truth to what Flora said? Or has she planted the thought in his head and now he is thinking about her in an entirely different way?
“No?” He snorts, spinning around to face the crowd. “Such a shame you all came here to burn to death.”
“This is your king?” Hayes’ voice says, a hint of shock twisted with amusement. “The one you all follow blindly and trust with your future?”
He walks up the backside of the stage, his hands tucked in his pockets.
“I am their king. Trust comes with the title.” He snorts.
“Good thing you haven’t led them into a useless war with the wrong species all this time.” Alpha Merikh says, standing in the audience, Colette at his side.
“You stole my son, and then you hatched him before he was due and imprinted him on your warrior. Let’s not pretend this was all happenstance, Alpha.”
“You already have the true perpetrator in your midst in your mountain, unless of course you killed him?”
“That is enough.” Teiran’s father grits out, his body vibrating as he grows larger, scales erupting from his cheeks before a snout the size of Merikh pops out. My eyes grow wide in shock as Hayes grabs my hand, yanking me away from the stage. In an instant, he is trusting a baby Tiago into my arms and gripping my face.
“You two need to get to safety.” He is serious. Hayes wants me to run and hide during this fight, as if he has forgotten everything I am capable of. “Like fucking hell I will.” I say, reaching out and gripping his hand tight. “I do not need you to protect me.”
“I’m saving you, like you asked me to do.” He frowns, pulling away. “I can’t fight thinking you might get hurt.”
“And I can’t leave you thinking you won’t come back.” I argue to his back as he rushes off.
Tiago tugs at the scarf around my et neck, the silk falling away as he seems focused on my mark before he reaches out and touches it. Chuckling as I shy away from his little probing finger. My heart is torn as I watch Hayes, Colette and Merikh circle around the morphing, massive dragon. Flora steps up as well, her fingers calling roots from the earth as she latches to his feet, trying to keep him in place.
et Roars break out behind me, dragons, lycans and wolves over take the open space, chairs knocking to the side. My skin goosebumps as the severity of the situation seeps in. A single flame in here and everyone is dead Dragons step up to either side of me, closing off my exit, but then on second glance I realize they are preparing to protect me from the flames.
Tiago is important and must be protected. Allowing me to die is the same as allowing him to lose his mind as he grows older. The only safe people in this entire war zone are me and this child, and Hayes knows that. So then why did he try to insist run and hide with Tiago for safety?
The dragon to my right swings out in fury, a wild screech coming from its mouth as it creates an opening for me to run and I take it. If Hayes knows I am safe, if he knows they won’t hurt me, then he needs me hidden for his plan. It is the only thing that makes sense to me.
I look over my shoulder, in time to velik see him leap onto the back of the dragon, who was blocking me in his lycan form, claws flailing as he tears chunks from the beast’s scaly He meets my eyes for a mere moment before I watch the tail of the other dragon fly at his back, slamming into him with a sick crack, his limp body flying before slamming into the side of the stage.
He doesn’t move, his chest still and his body laying at a weird angle as my chest shreds itself, making it impossible to breathe. I have to go to him, i have to do something more than hide.
*Hayes*
Sound fades in and out as I drag my body up before I stand, stumbling back a few steps into the stage. My claws sink into the plywood covered set as I blink my eyes to force them to focus. A cry breaks out, making me look up as a flame barrels down toward my face. I drop to the floor, covering my face as the heat diffuses before me and hot steam floats around me.
“Hayes, move your ass!” Colette cries out, her voice strained.
My bones creak as I stand, my lycan form taking all the hits I know I will feel so intensely once the adrenaline wears off. I spin and find Colette with two hands outstretched. One aimed at me and one at my brother as her jaw clenches with effort. Damn it, the last thing I need is her wasting her effort on me. But there is no telling her that. Colette, the once meek and timid queen, is everything but that now.
“Thatcher, get all the children to safety before things get out of hand,” Colette demands, her voice full of authority as he spins and disappears into the mass brawl happening around us.
I had expected a war, even prepared for one, but with this many dragons, I should have planned better. Merikh’s Lycan roars as he dodges a massive flame from the dragon king, and I watch the slithering roots at his massive legs as they tear away from the earth.
Shit. Flora is losing her hold. I inhale, ignoring the sting at my side as I rush forward and launch myself on to a smaller dragon. My body hits the scales hard, bouncing as I slide down his side and slip under his legs. The floor jolts me for a moment before I notice him lifting his front leg stomp on me. I roll to the side, dodging his attack, then throw my claws up and into his tender underside, They slice through with ease, warm blood trickling down my fingers and wrist as he rears back. I drag my arm down through his flesh before he lifts off of me and stumbles away, falling back into his human form. There isn’t a second to finish him as a wolf goes in for the kill. A wet, heavy item hits me, throwing me back to the ground.
I blink when I see no other than Zale, the Siren king, jumping up from me. He extends a hand out to me, helping me up before his eyes grow wild and tiles from the floor explode up, water raining down on everyone. Lycans and wolves howl in excitement as dragons take to the air breaking through the ceiling, looking for an escape from the wet.
Drywall sprinkles down with shards of wood and roofing. I drag Zale out of the way of a large chunk, before rushing back to the collapsed stage, a massive opening overhead as I look up and see Merikh rising into the sky, his leg in the jaws of the fucker I came to kill.
Without a thought, I sprint out of the building, rushing around the back as I sprint through the trees, keeping my eyes on my Alpha, who seems to dangle lifelessly. Pain rips through my chest at the thought of him dying because of me.
-I am okay-His voice enters my head and I stumble in my run.
-Why the fuck haven’t you been talking to me the whole time?– I growl through the mind link and I swear I hear a little snicker.
-He is after the children. It is faster to ride along, even if it’s a little painful-
-How does he know where they are- I growl through the link.
-He can sense Tiago. Kyra is with them all. Percy came for them after the fight started—
Fury ignites a boost of energy as I force myself to move faster. Only to find myself face to face with two dragons breaking through the trees and landing in front of me. I cut to the right, ducking under a tree as it crashes down. Heat tickles at my back as I look over my shoulder and drop to my stomach, flames blowing over my head as they pin me down and move closer.
There is nowhere to go as the heat grows painful, other than sideways. I scan the area, hoping for something to make my way to and hide behind, but there is nothing. Fuck, I am trapped belly down in the dirt by a flame over my fucking head. Then the heat disappears, replaced by a cool gentle breeze as I push myself up, but instead of seizing the moment to run, I look over my shoulder and freeze.
A blur of red flashes as I twist around, racing toward the dragons, my heart pounding in my throat as I try to swallow the fear living there. When did she get here? What the fuck is she doing?
The dragon tries to breathe its fire at her, but fails as clear oily liquid pours from a cut in its throat. It stumbles forward as Kyra leaps onto its head and claws at the back of his neck, scales dislodging as she howls out and thrusts her clawed hand through its thick neck.
The other dragon shakes from its surprise stupor as it roars out in anger and charges forward, its head rearing back as it prepares to burn Kyra of its comrade. Kyra’s not paying attention as she tumbles off the other dragon, her chest heaving with effort. I roar, trying like hell to get her to look, pay attention, anything.
My legs kick faster, my lycan growling as I drop to all fours like a wolf and move faster, my long clawed arms grabbing the dirt, then throw myself further and faster just as the dragon’s mouth glows, snarling lips falling open.
I jump up, my claw reaching up, slicing through its jaw, heat tearing through my hand as I cry out in pain, but I force myself to yank its face down, using my other claw to hammer into its large, shocked eyes.
It roars in fury, throwing me away as I land roughly and my lycan disappears into my mind, leaving me in my human form. I shove myself up, rushing back over to the dragon to finish it off but before I can move to it, Kyra’s lycan clutches its neck in her jaw, growling as she tars violently, blood spewing down her face before she breaks away, a chunk of its meat in her mouth.
I watch her in shock, a surprised chuckle in my chest as I take a step toward her. My hand clutches to chest. She shifts back into her human form, her chest heaving and down as she makes her way to me tears in her eyes as she flings herself into my arms.
“You are such a stubborn idiot.” She mutters to my neck, her face burying into me.
“How did you know where I was?” I ask and she scoffs, pushing away.
“You marked me, you idiot,” she frowns up at me. “I can feel everything you are feeling since it’s one sided.”
