“How was that even going to work? You like sloppy seconds, Beta? You like getting someone else’s cast off?” I ask, still taunting “Why, you looking to get rid of your lady doctor? I’d take that sweet *
little piece of… That’s as far as he gets before my warriors begin pummeling him.
“Don’t kill him yet,” I growl, fighting Arric for control. He’s ready to kill this Beta for what he just said about Yara, but I need information.
When my warriors step back, the Beta is laughing. I can tell it hurts him, but he either knows what’s coming or he’s used to feeling this level of pain.
“Why do they want my mate?” I ask.
“Wouldn’t you like to know?” he asks, earning him another punch.”How many Alphas are after her?” I ask.
“Enough that you won’t survive. Maybe theyll pass her around.. he begins, but my warriors go at him again. This time, I see the stitches have opened and he’s begun bleeding from the gut, which gives me an idea. I don’t know anatomy like Yara does, but I’m pretty sure Squeezing anything inside his body is going to hurt.
I step forward and let Arric’s claws come forward. I slowly slice the stitches down the side of his stomach. “Last chance to make this easy for yourself.” I say, my voice hard.”Fuck you,” he says.
“You’re not my type,” I say, sliding my hand inside the wound. I watch his face as he grits his teeth and when I find something that feels like an organ, I wrap my hand around it.
“How many?” I ask again, slowly squeezing my hand together.
He fights as long as he can before shouting out his answer.”THREE!”
“Three including Thomas?” I ask him.”YES!”
“Who are the other two?” I ask, not closing my hand any more, but not releasing it either.
He tries to breathe through the pain, and it only takes a little more of a squeeze for him to answer.”Alphas Brady and Quinton!”
“The three of them have been working together against me?””Yes!”
“What about Alpha Harold?” I ask.”What about him?”
“He’s not part of this alliance?” I ask.”No. He attacks us too.”
I hear Charlie call to the warriors he intends to take with him, ready to attack Alpha Thomas’ pack. The howls go up all around the pack.
“I may have lied earlier, my Beta hadn’t left yet to kill your Alpha, but he’s leaving now. Killing you will only weaken Thomas even more. So, as much as I’d like to let you die a slow death for touching my mate, it’s time for you to die,” I say.
He begins thrashing, but I grip the organ and rip it out of his body. pulling more guts than I realized as it tugs free from whatever it was attached to inside his body. It only takes a moment for his body to stop thrashing as blood and guts splatter on the floor.
“Get him out of here, burn the body. Don’t let your Luna see. She may not have disagreed with me killing him, but she won’t want to see this,” I tell them.”Yes, Alpha.”
I step out of the cell, washing the blood off my hand and arm before heading over to the hospital to check on my mate and meet my Beta’s mate.
That Beta didn’t last long…
Yara—
I finished stitching Laney up while Charlie talked to her and Noelle about who was worth saving from their previous pack. In the end, Laney gave him a list, but it wasn’t a very long list.
“They’ve collected some she-wolves from other packs when we’ve attacked. Some were forced into mate bonds that they didn’t want. They won’t be unhappy that you’re killing their mates, but it will make them weak,” she says.
“You didn’t help them?” I ask her. I don’t mean for it to sound judgmental, but she’s obviously a strong warrior and a woman. She could have stood up for them.
“You underestimate the menace in our pack, Luna,” Noelle says kindly. “My sister has always put my life ahead of others, including her own. Even after I became an adult. They would have killed her, or worse, used me against her, if she’d stood up to them” she says, smiling at Laney.
“Everyone wanted you. You’re sweet, you’re smart, and you’re beautiful,” Laney says to her.
I think our Beta is a bit smitten with this young woman, Annika says in my head. I look over and see him smiling at Noelle in a way that’s very similar to how Warren smiles at me.
‘Do you think…I begin. Yes, she’s his mate.’
V
“That will make Warren happy,’ I say, knowing that he’s been feling grumpier about Gregor’s attention to me and Annika.
It makes me happy too. I like Gregor, but I would never choose him over Arric, she says, making me curious. Because Arric is an Alpha wolf?’
‘Because he’s our mate and he’s a good wolf. He’s good for this pack and he’s good for us, Yara. So is Warren. I know you agree with me or you wouldn’t be seriously considering letting him mark us.’
It’s true. I’ve never wanted to bind myself to someone, never wanted to give something so permanent because I never trusted anyone enough to agree to share my life with them. But Warren…he’s different.
“You’ll need to be prepared to look over those women when they come in, Luna. Theyll need your help,” Laney says, redirecting my attention back to them.
“How many are we talking about?” I ask, looking over the list that Charlie is creating.
“Fifteen to twenty, Luna, and that doesn’t include any omegas we come across.”
“How many warriors are you taking?” I ask him.”I was planning on a hundred, if you clear them.”
“Savannah, let Anna finish up here. You and I need to clear these warriors and then we need to prep the hospital for an influx of people.”
“Yes, Luna,” she says, walking out to go speak to Anna, Erica, and Katie.
“Luna, when’s the last time you slept?” Charlie asks me.
“I don’t know, Charlie, what time is it?” I ask, smiling at him. I watch Noelle tense at our casual interaction and the gesture doesn’t go unnoticed by her sister.
“It’s close to midnight,” he tells me. I sigh. Sleep is a hot commodity around here that barely anyone gets.
“‘l sleep when everyone is taken care of.” I tell him.
I watch his eyes go unfocused before he looks back at me. “Alpha Will be here soon.”
I narrow my eyes at him, putting my hands on my hips. “Are you telling on me, Charlie?”
“Who puts you on downtime, Luna? After what I heard you said to me about following me into the Moon Goddess’ realm, it won’t be me. But if you want to go toe to toe against our Alpha, that’s up to you. I’ll just be sorry that I missed it,” he says, smirking at me and making my eyes narrow even more.
“Why would she have to follow you to the Moon Goddess’ realm?” Noelle asks, and now it’s my turn to smirk.
“Because he nearly died. He came into this hospital without a pulse, isn’t that right, Beta? I ask him, casually sarcastic. Two can play this game. I’m not the only one with a mate in the pack now.
