Kyla looked down and ate the food Martin Weiss brought over. Her slightly lowered eyelids concealed everything in her eyes.
It was unusually lively around Tina Stephenson. The parents of families with little boys led their sons to Tina Stephenson, wanting desperately to make their faces known. If Tina Stephenson did anything special like smiling or babbling as she grasped their sons’ hands, these adults could say they were destined for each other or something of the like.
However, the one-month-old Tina Stephenson only slept soundly in her cradle. No matter how busy it was, she did not wake up.
Lina grabbed her husband and muttered, “What’s going on? Why does the full moon party for Tina seem like a blind date party?”
The parents not only took their sons to Tina Stephenson but also Lina. The rich ladies kept praising their sons in front of Lina, and Lina’s ears hurt from all that talk about the accolades they had received.
“Tina is the heir of the Stephenson family, after all. Many people have their eyes set on Tina as they want to marry into the Stephenson family,” Hadwin Stephenson said calmly.
Lina said, “Are you really going to let Tina inherit the Stephenson family? What if Tina is bad at doing business? Aren’t you afraid she’ll bring down the Stephenson family?”
“When I pass her the Stephenson family, she can do whatever she wants with it. It’s up to her if she wants to bring the Stephenson family to a higher level or destroy it.”
Lina was surprised. Her husband spoke as if he was only giving their daughter a toy, not a huge company worth tens of billions of dollars.
“How about I give birth to a few more children? We’ll see which one of them is suitable to inherit the Stephenson family,” Lina asked thoughtfully. After all, one could not put all of one’s eggs in one basket.
It was good to have more options.
However, Hadwin Stephenson’s expression changed as soon as she said that. “No!” The word escaped his mouth quickly.
Lina looked at him in surprise, only finding his reaction a little aggressive. “Why not? Didn’t you think it was a good idea to have more children?”
Hadwin Stephenson pressed his thin lips together tightly. Then, he raised his hands and pulled Lina into his arms.
The two of them were standing in the middle of the banquet hall, and their embrace instantly attracted many people’s attention.
“Hey, there are people around us…” Lina whispered to remind him. However, halfway through her sentence, she suddenly stopped speaking because she could feel Hadwin Stephenson’s arms trembling as he held her.
‘He’s… trembling!’
Lina quickly said, “Hadwin, what’s come over you? Are you feeling unwell? If you’re feeling unwell, then… Then we’ll find an excuse to leave. I’ll bring you to the hospital.”
She could ask Grace and Jason to host the full moon party.
Hadwin Stephenson muttered, “I’m okay. I’m just… scared. Lina, Tina’s enough. Let’s not have any more kids, okay?”
Lina paused. She knew what he was afraid of. He thought he was prepared for everything, but her water broke sooner than expected. She had a narrow escape during labor and was even in a coma for several days after that.
“But… that was because I was injected with poison. It’s not like someone will hurt me every time I give birth. If we’re a little more careful next time…” she muttered.
Hadwin Stephenson said, “But I’m not taking any chances. I’m happy with Tina alone. Really. She’s the best gift God could give us. One child is enough. Really! Lina, I don’t want to go through that fear again. I was so scared when I saw you lying in the hospital bed with your eyes closed. You showed no reaction aside from breathing…”
He would still be awakened by the despair he felt back then after dreaming of it at night. Then, he would stare at her for a long time before coming to his senses.
Lina instantly felt her nose turn a little sore. He had never told her these. She thought everything was over after she woke up.
However, it turned out he was still afraid.
Lina hugged Hadwin Stephenson back as she gently patted his back and comforted him softly. “Alright, there, there. I’ll always be here for you. You know me. I always keep my promises!”
“How long are you two planning on hugging?” A teasing voice rang in Lina’s ears, and she finally seemed to realize it. She stopped hugging him and turned to look at Grace, who had walked over.
Then, she realized many people around them were looking at them. She instantly blushed.
Grace noticed her best friend’s slightly reddened eyes and froze, but she smiled and held her best friend’s hand. “Come, let me show you what I got for Tina’s full moon party.” With that said, she pulled her best friend toward the lounge.
Jason did not follow them but went up to Hadwin Stephenson. “Everyone here will probably discuss how you two have a great relationship right now. It can end some rumors without much effort.”
Hadwin Stephenson did not explain the hug earlier. He did not do it for the rumors. He just could not help himself.
He was scared when Lina said she wanted more children.
“What would you do if Grace got pregnant again?” Hadwin Stephenson asked suddenly. As far as he knew, Grace almost died when she gave birth to the triplets. If she got pregnant again, it would cause great damage to her body.
“She’s not going to get pregnant again. I’m not going to let her get pregnant again,” Jason said confidently. Then, he raised his eyebrows and looked at Hadwin Stephenson. “What’s the matter? Are you afraid of Lina getting pregnant again?”
“Yes, I am,” said Hadwin Stephenson after smiling bitterly.
After all, he would go mad if he had to go through that again.
“There are many things a man can do to prevent a woman from getting pregnant. It depends on how much you’re willing to sacrifice for them,” said Jason. He had also gone through what Hadwin Stephenson was going through.
Something flashed across Hadwin Stephenson’s eyes when he heard that.
In the lounge, Grace asked Lina what had happened and why her eyes were red. Lina said, “Hadwin was scared when I said I wanted more children. He said he didn’t want any more kids. I… never knew he was that scared.”
Lina sobbed a little when she said that.
Grace had witnessed for herself how Hadwin Stephenson went through the days when her best friend was in a coma, so she could understand Hadwin Stephenson’s fear. “Men might look strong sometimes. It’s as if they can handle the sky if it falls and take care of anything. But sometimes, they can be very fragile too.”
It was the same for both Hadwin Stephenson and Jay.
“I just think that I didn’t care enough about him, especially after I woke up. I focused most of my attention on my daughter.
Otherwise, it wouldn’t have taken me this long to find out how scared he was,” said Lina.
“And what about you? Are you planning on having another baby?” asked Grace.
Lina hesitated for a moment, but she eventually shook her head. “I don’t want him to be that scared anymore. If I do get pregnant, perhaps he’ll be in fear from the moment I find out I’m pregnant until I give birth to the baby.” If that was the case, her pregnancy would be almost a year of mental torture for him.
She would like to have more children because their family would be more lively that way.
