She paused as her round eyes stared at him. “I still couldn’t bear to abort the baby after you left that day. When I
lay on the operating table and heard the doctor asking me whether I was sure I wanted to proceed with the surgery, I shouted no.
No, because this is our baby. We agreed to give birth to the baby if I ever got pregnant…”
She still felt a pang of fear at the thought of how close she was to losing the baby.
Hadwin Stephenson’s dark eyes met Lina’s eyes. The darkness in his eyes made it hard to decipher what was on his mind.
Lina timidly raised her hand and slowly reached for Hadwin Stephenson’s cheek.
Hadwin Stephenson’s eyes narrowed, but he did not avoid it. Her hand pressed his cheek gently as she had wanted. “Has it finally stopped hurting whenever I touch you?”
His eyes grew darker. “So what? If you hadn’t disappointed me, I wouldn’t have let you go no matter how much pain I was in. But I’m utterly disheartened now. Even if I’m no longer in pain when you touch me, it’s pointless to me now.”
“It’s not pointless!” Lina could not help but hug Hadwin Stephenson hard. “Katherine Jackson told me how painful it is to get rid of the blood curse. The pain felt like you were being deboned, and you had to suffer through it more than once. Every time you underwent the session, it hurt more than the last but you endured it for me, didn’t you?”
“Yes, I endured all that for you. I was even prepared to lose my life. I only thought I would go to you and promise you a lifetime of happiness if I survived. If I died, my fortune would be set up into a fund for you and the baby. You’d never have to worry about money for the rest of your life.””
Lina felt a pang in her heart when she heard that. ‘So that’s the truth…’ He told her nothing but had already made plans.
“Were you afraid that… you wouldn’t survive the process of lifting the blood curse, so you said nothing to me for fear that I would be too devastated?” asked Lina. She finally figured out the real reason he was so hesitant at the time.
Instead of answering Lina’s question, Hadwin Stephenson said, “What was waiting when I could escape from death and finally remove the blood curse on me? You were the one in the hospital trying to abort the baby, saying you didn’t have feelings for me and wouldn’t love me anymore!”
Every word he said seemed like a slap in the face and was slicing her heart.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry…” Lina sobbed.
“You don’t have to apologize to me. It’s as meaningless as how you’re telling me you love me,” said Hadwin Stephenson.
Lina’s hand was still on Hadwin Stephenson’s cheek. One hand was not enough, so she added another.
“That’s not true. If I have disappointed you, then I’ll earn your trust again. Hadwin, please. Just give me a chance, okay? Just once!” Lina begged him.
He slowly looked down to hide the flickering struggle in them.
She always did this. She could easily make his mood fluctuate with some begging and crying.
“A chance? How do you want me to give you a chance?” Hadwin Stephenson asked after a long while.
“Let’s spend time together like we used to. Only one month. I only want one month! If you still won’t forgive me and be with me after a month, then I’ll leave you and stop bothering you. But I hope you won’t avoid me during this one month,” said Lina.
“A month?” Hadwin Stephenson sneered. “How can I believe that you’ll give up and stop bothering me after a month?”
“I can write you a guarantee letter!” Lina quickly said.
“A guarantee letter has no effect in law.” Hadwin Stephenson rejected it bluntly.
“Then…” Lina was troubled now. Even trying to make him believe her had become so difficult now. “Then I’ll swear with my own life!”
Looking at him with an expression of unmatched determination, she said, “I swear with my life that I’ll leave if you still won’t be with me after a month. I won’t show up in front of you of my own accord from then on! If I fail to do this, then after I give birth, I’ll However, Hadwin Stephenson suddenly interrupted her before she could finish swearing. “Okay, one month! You’ll return to Emerald City and never show up in front of me again. after a month.”
Lina let out a long sigh of relief even though she was not quite satisfied with what Hadwin Stephenson said. He spoke as if he was confident they would not get back together after a month, but at least he agreed.
“Okay, then… you have to answer my calls during this month. and tell the security guards downstairs, as well as your secretary, not to stop me whenever I come to see you.” Lina began to ramble on.
Hadwin Stephenson turned his head away and walked over to his desk.
Even he could not believe that he had consented to her ridiculous request.
‘A month? Does she think she’s playing some love game?’
However, he could not help shuddering at the thought of the last part of her swear that she was about to say. For a moment. he was afraid the might make some blused myth He resisted almost instinctively, not even wanting to hear it!
Hadwin Stephenson ignored Lina, opened the file on his desk, and dealt with work.
Lina sat on the couch and put the snacks on the coffee table. She also poured a glass of warm water for herself at the water dispenser. She looked through some infant care-related web pages on her phone while eating the snacks.
It was as if they were strangely comfortable with each other, and everything was so natural.
Out of the corners of her eyes, Lina secretly glanced at Hadwin Stephenson, who was working. This moment felt like they were back in the old days.
Whenever she came to see him back then, she would be eating and drinking on the couch in his office while he was busy with work.
His office was always full of snacks she liked to eat, so much. so that she later complained, “Look, I’ve gained weight. You put so many snacks around the office to tempt me. I’m going to be fat sooner or later.”
“What does that matter? I love you even if you’re fat,” he said with a smile on his lips.
However, five years later, she was not fat and there were no more snacks for her in his office.
Lina was looking through infant care websites on her phone at first, but her phone camera was now secretly aimed at Hadwin Stephenson as she could not help but take photo after photo of him.
Even if she could not be with him in the future, these photos could be keepsakes.
When the secretary walked into the president’s office after knocking on the door, they saw their boss standing beside the couch with a phone in his hand while Lina was lying on the couch.
Lina’s body was covered with a thin blanket.
“President, here’s the report you asked for.” The secretary respectfully handed the document to Hadwin Stephenson. Out of the corners of their eyes, they caught a glimpse of the phone screen. It was a photo of the president.
“You can go,” Hadwin Stephenson said to the secretary. Just as the secretary turned to leave, he said, “Don’t make a noise when you close the door”
