It took Grace a lot of explaining to dissuade the two young ones from spending the night in the hospital.
By the time Uncle Kwan went home with the two siblings, Grace felt like she had fought a tough battle.
In the evening, two more children came to the ward.
Only this time, it was Mason and Veronica Barlow.
Grace was surprised to see the two children who were caught and brought over by bodyguards.
When she heard that Veronica Barlow had snuck in and there were a bunch of reporters waiting at the hospital’s entrance, Grace was worried about the two children.
“Where are your parents? They didn’t come to the hospital with you?” Grace asked Veronica Barlow. After all, the two children were so young. The He family’s house was also some distance away from the hospital.
“They went out for a party, so I came here with Mason in a taxi!” said Veronica Barlow.
Grace broke into a sweat from fright for the two children. She was just glad they did not get into an illegal taxi.
“Uncle Reed, aunt Cummins, Mason saw the news online and was worried about you. He wanted to see you,” said Veronica Barlow as she pushed Mason, who was standing behind her, a few steps forward. “Didn’t you say you wanted to see them?”
Mason blinked, and his long black eyelashes started fluttering like fans. His eyes with an empty look in them stared at Jason and Grace. Moments later, he turned to Veronica Barlow and said, “I’ve seen them.”
With that said, he shook Veronica Barlow’s hand, implying that they could go now.
The time he took to ‘see’ them was so short it would leave one speechless.
Veronica Barlow seemed a little embarrassed. “Won’t you see them a little longer?”
The little one blinked again and turned his head to look at Jason and Grace as if he was obediently doing what Veronica Barlow just mentioned.
It might be upsetting for ordinary children to be indifferent to their biological parents, but Grace was happy.
It was because she knew how hard it was.
Mason’s past was different from that of ordinary children. Secretary Wang’s method of education was to completely destroy a child’s innocence.
Fortunately, Mason met Veronica Barlow. The little girl had given Mason warmth and something to hold on to.
Apart from Veronica Barlow it was difficult for Mason to open his heart up to others.
However, Mason was worried about her and Jay after seeing the news. Did that mean that they were slowly starting to have a place in Mason’s heart?
Maybe Mason would accept them one day.
Grace walked up to Mason and crouched down with her eyes looking straight into the little one’s eyes. “I’m happy that you came to see us.”
Confusion flickered in the little one’s eyes as if he was wondering why the one he should call Mommy was happy.
‘Wasn’t she hurt? Shouldn’t she be sad?
He slightly raised his hands toward Grace’s neck. Veronica Barlow wanted to stop him, but it was too late.
His small hands grasped Grace’s neck. As there was still gauze around her neck, his grasp touched her wound. Her brows began to frown.
Jason saw this and roared, “Mason, let go!” He knew his son had hurt Grace.
The little one seemed to be startled by Jason’s shouts, and his little body suddenly tensed.
Grace hurriedly soothed the little one and whispered, “Jay, Mason is just concerned about my injury.”
With that, she gently took Mason’s hand again and kept his fingers off the gauze around her neck but gently laid it flat on her neck.
Grace said with a smile, “See, it doesn’t hurt this way. Mason, my injury will heal soon. As long as I don’t touch the wound, it won’t hurt much.”
The little one’s dark eyes stared at Grace. “It won’t hurt?”
“Yes, it won’t hurt,” said Grace.
Then, she saw a faint smile on the little one’s lips, making his indifferent face appear friendly.
Jason looked at Mason and somehow got lost in a trance.
Half an hour later, Jason ordered his staff to escort Veronica Barlow and Mason safely back to the He family’s house. Finally, the ward was quiet again.
Grace asked Jason, “What were you thinking when you were looking at Mason just now?”
Jason pressed his lips together gently, surprised that she even noticed.
Looking at Jason’s hesitant face, Grace said, “Jay, we’re husband and wife. You can tell me anything.”
Jason then slowly said, “Mason… looks more and more like Grace froze and realized that the woman he was talking about was ‘Mrs. Watts’ from before she was disfigured.
She had seen a photo of his mother when she was young, and Mason did look like her. He might look even more like her in a few years.
“Jay, Mason is our child no matter how much you hate Mrs. Watts. Don’t…” Grace paused as if she was choosing her words.
Jason went ahead and said, “Don’t worry, I’m not going to take my anger out on our children. Mason is the child you fought so hard to give birth to. All three children are precious to me.”
Grace was relieved to hear that. She hesitated for a moment and said, “My mentor and his wife saw the news and called to ask about it. Mrs. Watts even wants to come back to Emerald City to see you, not caring about what would happen to her. Jay, I think not a day goes by that Mrs. Watts doesn’t regret it. Perhaps she wants to make up for her mistakes with her life.”
“Even if she dies, she can’t make up for it.” Jason’s voice suddenly turned cold.
Grace knew that some things in this world could not be remedied. No matter how miserable Mrs. Watts was, she could not undo that mistake.
She knew he did not like to talk about Mrs. Watts, but he still needed closure for what had happened between him and his mother.
